York Revolution News Release
The York Revolution opened a seven-game road trip with a 7-4 victory over the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs in front of 4,781 fans at Regency Furniture Stadium on Friday evening. With the win, the Revs now lead the Atlantic League's Wild Card race by seven games over Somerset, lowering their magic number to nine to eliminate the Patriots from contention. York also remains within 4.5 games of first place in the Freedom Division.
The win was the third straight for the Revs, coming back from early deficits in all three.
Southern Maryland took the lead in the second on a home run to left by Jesse Gutierrez, and made it 2-0 in the third on an RBI double to left from Brian Barton.
Crabs starter Nick Green retired 11 consecutive batters after a first inning single, but the Revs finally got to him in the fifth as Jeff Fiorentino and Michael Hernandez both singled with one out, advanced on a Travis Scott ground out, and scored when Brandon Haveman lined the first pitch into right-center for a two-out, two-run double, tying the game at 2-2.
In a major turning point with the game tied, Revs starter Chris Waters allowed a leadoff double to Jeremy Owens in the bottom of the fifth, but Scott picked off Owens at second for the first out. Then after back-to-back singles, Waters fell behind Gutierrez 3-0, only to have the cleanup man hit into an inning-ending 6-4-3 double play.
With the momentum shifting back in York's favor, Chris Nowak slammed his league-leading 29th home run of the season to left field in the sixth, giving the Revs a 3-2 lead. Johan Limonta followed with a single to right, and scored from first on a Fiorentino triple down the right field line. Hernandez followed with a sacrifice fly, increasing the lead to 5-2.
Waters (5-6) finished his night with a perfect sixth inning, earning the win after allowing just two runs.
Southern Maryland had runners at second and third with no outs in the seventh, but could only score one run on a Casey Benjamin sacrifice fly, as reliever Adam Thomas prevented further trouble, keeping the lead at 5-3.
The Revs recovered that run in the eighth when Fiorentino crossed the plate on a throwing error by Benjamin at second base attempting to turn a double play.
The Crabs again pulled within two on a Matt Padgett RBI groundout in the bottom of the eighth, but York answered back when Nowak ripped an RBI single to right in the ninth for the final tally of the night. It was Nowak's second RBI of the game and league-leading 91st of the season, the second-highest total in a single season in Revs history.
Closer Ricardo Gomez struck out two in a scoreless ninth for his 12th save, tying the second most in a single season in team history.
Green (8-10) took the loss for Southern Maryland, charged with five runs in 5.2 innings.
The win is just the second all-time in a series opener at Regency Furniture Stadium in 15 tries for the Revs, who improve to 67-57 overall for the season, reaching 10 games over .500 for the first time. They have won six of their last eight overall.
York 's Chris Cody (10-13, 4.13) faces Southern Maryland's Gaby Hernandez (3-1, 3.28) on Saturday night at 6:35 p.m. Revs fans can catch the action live on SportsRadio 1350 and Shoutcast.com (YorkRevs) beginning at 6:15 p.m. with Darrell Henry on the call.
