Cromwell, Conn. - The Bridgeport Sound Tigers concluded their preseason schedule tonight with a loss to their Connecticut rivals, the Hartford Wolf Pack, by the score of 3-0. Greg Moore scored the only tally Hartford would need in the second period, while on the power-play. Tom Pyatt and Dale Weise had they other goals for the Wolf Pack.
Peter Mannino started in goal for the second straight night and without his efforts the Wolf Pack would have put the game out of reach early. Mannino had several glove saves and robbed Hartford's leading scorer last season, Pierre Parenteau about half-way through the opening period to keep the game scoreless going into the second period.
Moore would open the scoring for the Wolf Pack 5:39 into the second period while Hartford was on the man-advantage. Hugh Jessiman dug the puck out of the right corner and sent a pass to Bobby Sanguinetti at the point. Sanguinetti snapped a shot on goal that Mannino stopped, but the rebound bounced to Moore in the left circle where he fired in for his first of the preseason. Mannino came out of the game at the end of the middle frame and was replaced by Nathan Lawson. Mannino finished the game with 22 saves on 23 shots.
The Wolf Pack tacked on two more goals in the third period off the sticks of Pyatt and Weise. Sean Bentivoglio had the best scoring chance for the Sound Tigers when he came in on a breakaway on Hartford net-minder, Matt Zaba. Bentivoglio cranked a slap-shot that Zaba was able to squeeze into his chest.
On the man-advantage, the Sound Tigers were 0-for-5 while going 6-for-7 on the penalty-kill. Lawson turned aside 14 of the 16 shots he faced while Zaba stopped all 21 Sound Tiger attempts to earn the shutout.
The Sound Tigers finished their exhibition schedule 1-3-0-0 and will begin the regular season this upcoming Friday when they travel to Philadelphia to take on the Phantoms at the Wachovia Spectrum at 7:05 p.m. The home-opener is scheduled for the following weekend on Saturday, Oct. 18th at 7 p.m. when the Sound Tigers face-off against the Albany River Rats. Fans in attendance will take home a magnet calendar and have the chance to meet ECW Original Tommy Dreamer.
