In the top of the second inning John Drennen singled to drive in Rodney Choy Foo to give Kinston a 1-0 lead. Later in the inning Stephen Head scored on a passed ball from catcher Sandy Madera.

The Keys would storm back in the bottom of the third inning, as Tripper Johnson drew a walk and Paco Figueroa would double down the left field line to move Johnson to third. Arturo Rivas would walk and Jay Gibbons would hit a high infield fly that was misplayed by third baseman Matt Whitney, allowing Johnson and Figueroa to score. Mario Delgado followed with a double to left field to drive in Rivas. A pitch later, Chuck Lofgren unleashed a wild pitch to let Gibbons cross the plate, giving the Keys a 4-2 lead.

In the bottom of the fifth inning Travis Brown singled to centerfield to score Sandy Madera, putting the Keys in front 5-2.
