Kinston falls to Frederick

A defensive miscue made the difference in Kinston's 5-3 loss at Frederick on Monday night. With the K-Tribe up 2-0 in the third inning, Frederick sent Jay Gibbons up to the plate with the bases loaded and two outs. Gibbons, the Baltimore Orioles usual starting outfielder, was making a rehab start in Frederick.
Kinston starter Chuck Lofgren got the Major Leaguer to hit a harmless pop-up in front of home plate. K-Tribe catcher Javi Herrera camped out under it, but seemed to get called off by third baseman Matt Whitney at the last second. The ball hit off Whitney's glove, two runs scored and Frederick evened the game at two. The Keys scored two more runs in the inning on a Mario Delgado RBI double and a wild pitch for four unearned runs in the inning.
Kinston tried to come back late, they had the bases loaded with no outs in the eighth and runners on second and third with no outs in the ninth, but could only manage a run on a ground out by Jordan Brown. Chuck Lofgren (13-3) was the tough luck loser, picking up his first loss since June 8th giving up four hits and just one earned run. Both Mike Sarbaugh and Jordan Brown were ejected from the game after a close call at first in the eighth inning.
