Blue Rocks split a pair in Salem

Salem, VA --- The Wilmington Blue Rocks (35-35, 16-14) lost the continuation of a suspended game, 8-7, and took a seven-inning nightcap, 5-1, to split with the Salem Avalanche on Monday.

The latter contest saw starter Matt Goodson (2-5) throw a complete game, tossing seven innings of one-run ball on just four hits, one walk and three strikeouts.

Wilmington got its first run of the game in the third inning. Iggy Suarez doubled with one out and Chuck Jeroloman knocked him in with a single to left.

In the fourth, Jeff Corsaletti walked, took second on a wild pitch and went to third on a single by Andrew Pinckney. Scott White lined a ball to left snared on a dive by Beau Torbert. Corsaletti tagged and scored making it a 2-0 game. Suarez followed with his second double of the night and Jeroloman walked, loading the bases. Jay Johnson fell behind in the count 0-2, but sent a fly ball to right field deep enough to score Pinckney for a 3-0 Wilmington advantage.

The Blue Rocks earned their fourth run of the game in the fifth on an RBI single by Pinckney. The Avalanche scored their lone run that same inning on a bunt single, straight single, sac bunt and an RBI groundout.

Wilmington added another run in the seventh on three straight one-out hits. John Otness doubled, Ian Bladergroen singled and Corsaletti brought home Otness with an RBI single for the 5-1 final score.

Earlier in the evening, a game suspended due to rain on July 4 started in the top of the fourth inning with the Blue Rocks trailing 8-0. Mario Pena stood on the hill and tossed five scoreless innings, allowing just three hits and four walks with four strikeouts.

Bryan Pritz, Jeff Corsaletti and Jed Lowrie each drew full-count walks to start the fifth inning against Evan Englebrook Two batters later, Claudio Arias drove in two with a bases-loaded single to left. After Andrew Pinckney singled to right to load the bases, Ian Bladergroen drove in a run with a groundout to first base to make it an 8-3 game.

Wilmington exploded in the seventh with another four runs to make it a one-run game. Jeff Natale singled to right and two batters later, Andrew Pinckney doubled to right. Bladergroen doubled both of them in with a hit to right-center. Two batters later, Jay Johnson worked took a two-out, full-count pitch over the left field wall for a two-run homer, his second of the year

Down just 8-7, Wilmington wiggled out of a bases-loaded, one-out jam in the eighth. Pena worked a ground ball from the bat of Francisco Caraballo to third base. Andrew Pinckney threw home for one force out, and catcher Matt Kent tossed to first for a 5-2-3 double play that ended the inning.

In the bottom of the eighth, Jeff Corsaletti worked a leadoff walk against new Salem closer German Melendez. The recently promoted Melendez retired the next three Blue Rocks in order, leaving Corsaletti on at first base. In the ninth, Bladergroen got on base with a one-out walk, but Melendez retired the next two Rocks in order to end the game.

The loss went to Wilmington's original starter from July 4 Gary Galvez (4-5). The Cuba native allowed seven runs (six earned) on five hits and two walks with one strikeout over two innings plus four batters.

Wilmington and Salem will continue their series on Tuesday at 7:07 p.m. Blue Rocks lefty Andrew Dobies (8-5, 3.68) tosses against Salem right-hander Jimmy Barthmaier (5-8, 4.70).

GAME NOTES: Jeff Corsaletti walked four times in Wilmington's 8-7 loss to start the night, tying a franchise record he has already hit once this season. It marks the ninth time overall a Rock has walked four times in a game in team history.

Andrew Pinckney totaled six hits on the day. Pinckney went 3-for-5 in the earlier contest with a double and a run scored. In game two, Pinckney had a 3-for-4 night with an RBI and a run scored.

Mario Pena has yet to allow a run in nine innings with Wilmington this season.

Salem has gone 14-2 on the road in the second half, but just 4-10 at home. Since it was suspended while in action at Frawley, Wilmington's 8-7 loss to start Monday night counts as a home loss for the Rocks.

Five different Blue Rocks each drove in a run during Wilmington's 5-1 win in game two.

John Otness and Iggy Suarez each had two doubles in game two.

Matt Goodson became just the fifth Blue Rock this season to throw seven innings in a single outing.

After going winless in his first 11 starts as a Blue Rock this season, Goodson has won twice in his last three starts going 2-0 with a 1.96 ERA.
