MEDFORD, Ore. -- Strong relief pitching from Nick Wojtysiak and Shawn Kennedy II, and three RBIs from Austin Guibor, led the Victoria HarbourCats to a 6-4 win over the host Medford Rogues on Monday, the opener of a three-game series.
The win allowed the HarbourCats to tie a franchise record for consecutive wins with seven, a mark set in 2014.
The HarbourCats are next at home on Thursday night.
The two teams will meet again tonight in Medford, a 7:05pm start, with Matt Blais scheduled to start for the HarbourCats. Josh Mitchell is the scheduled starter for the HarbourCats in the series finale, on Wednesday.
On Monday, the HarbourCats scored runs in four of the first five innings and outhit the Rogues 9-8. Medford made three errors, one more than Victoria.
Guibor, Kevin Collard and Chris Fougner each had two-hit efforts. Guibor hit a two-run homer in the first inning and later doubled in Griffin Andreychuk, finishing 2-3 with two runs and three driven in.
Wojtysiak (Pepperdine) took over from starter Jonathan Buckley in the third inning and gave up two runs, one earned, striking out four in four innings of work. Kennedy (Georgetown College) then finished up with 2.2 innings of scoreless work, surrendering one hit, and earning his second save of the road trip.
The HarbourCats improved to 15-16 and sit three games away from a playoff spot.
The HarbourCats were coming off consecutive series sweeps, at home against Kitsap and on the road in Klamath Falls.
The HarbourCats sit in second place in the West Division, behind Bellingham, with 23 games to play in the regular season, including nine games to come against the division-leading Bells.
The HarbourCats remain in Medford Tuesday and Wednesday before returning home on Thursday, July 17 for Black Press Baseball Card/Victoria Chamber of Commerce Night with the Bells in town.
Other major promotions such as Superbath/Superheroes and Forces Friday with Galaxy Motors (Friday), a Wilson's Transportation giveaway (Saturday), Columbia Fuels night (July 28), Westshore U-Lock Mini-Storage (July 29), and a Big Brother Canada game with special guests, are due to be announced on Tuesday.
