St. Lucie Mets News Release
PORT ST. LUCIE Fla. - It was a second straight tough loss for St. Lucie, as the Jupiter Hammerheads beat the Mets 5-2 in 11 innings on Friday at Tradition Field.
Coming off a walk-off loss to Fort Myers on Thursday that spoiled a four-run rally, the Mets couldn't hold a 2-0 lead and fell to the Hammerheads in the series opener.
Yefri Perez scored the go-ahead run from third base in the 11th on a passed ball from catcher Jeff Glenn. Avery Romero followed with a two-run single off of Jimmy Duff to break the game open, 5-2.
All three runs were charged to Kyle Regnault, who had not surrendered a run since June 17.
New York Mets outfielder Michael Cuddyer, rehabbing from a left knee injury, started in right field and played the first nine innings. He went 0 for 3 with two deep fly outs to center, a ground out to second and he was intentionally walked to load the bases with the game tied 2-2 in the seventh. Dominic Smith would ground out to end the inning.
The Mets took an early 2-0 lead. Smith clubbed his fifth homer of the season, a solo shot to start the second, off of Hammerheads starter Luis Castillo.
In the third, Jeff McNeil walked and advanced to third on a double by Smith. Romero at second base lost control of the ball and McNeil scampered home on the error to make it 2-0.
Mets starter Kevin McGowan was in cruise control, retiring 10 of the first 11 batters he faced. However, he lost his command and walked back-to-back hitter in the fourth. Brian Anderson made him pay by ripping a two-run double that tied the game 2-2.
Three Jupiter relievers kept the Mets off the board over the final 6.1 innings. Matt Milroy tossed the final three to get the win. He gave up just one single and hit one batter while striking out two.
The Mets (56-53, 21-19) will try to avoid a three-game losing streak when they host the Hammerheads (52-60, 17-25) again on Saturday at Tradition Field. First pitch is 6:30 p.m. There will be postgame fireworks.
