Daytona Tortugas News Release
Lakeland, FL - The Daytona Tortugas (24-15, 61-48) defeated the Lakeland Flying Tigers (9-28, 42-64) by a final score of 5-0 for their sixth win in seven tries on Friday night at Joker Marchant Stadium.
For his second straight straight, RHP Jackson Stephens (W, 11-5) set the pace. After tossing six-two hit innings on July 31, he held the Flying Tigers to five singles and no walks with three strikeouts in seven stellar innings on Friday. Stephens stranded a runner on third with one out in both the first and third innings, and managed to retire 11 of the last 13 batters he faced.
Stephens has not allowed a run in any of his last 13 innings, and has lowered his ERA to a season-best 2.98.
RHP Jimmy Moran took over from there, striking out two hitters in a scoreless eighth, and RHP El'Hajj Muhammad worked around three walks to record the final three outs of the ballgame.
As for Daytona's offense, they got to Jairo Labourt (L, 2-8) in the second frame. C Joe Hudson drew a two-out walk, SS Carlton Daal reached first on a bunt single down the third-base line, and then came the runs.
DH Ty Washington lined a single to center and scored Hudson with his first Florida State League RBI to make it 1-0. LF Phillip Ervin followed with a blooper to left center that brought home Daal, and CF Junior Arias capped the rally with a hot shot down the third base line, good for an RBI double and a 3-0 advantage.
Ervin would add a run-scoring groundout in the fourth to extend Daytona's lead to 4-0, but Labourt found his rhythm from there. Lakeland's starter retired the last nine Tortugas he faced, and reliever Julio Felix handled six straight Daytona hitters out of the bullpen.
Hudson stopped the team-wide slump in a big way, launching a solo homer over the left field fence for Daytona's fifth run. The Tortugas catcher now has three homers in his last five games, after hitting three in his first 62.
Daal, Washington and Ervin each had two-hit nights as the Tortugas improved to 8-5 against the Flying Tigers in 2015. The series continues on Saturday night, with first pitch scheduled for 6:00 p.m. ET in Lakeland. LHP Nick Routt (5-1, 2.57 ERA) is scheduled to start for Daytona. Fans can listen to the action on The Great Voice of Volusia County, AM 1230 and AM 1490 WSBB, starting with the D.B. Pickles Pregame Show at 5:50 p.m. ET.
