Hagerstown Suns Game Notes

April 9, 2019 - South Atlantic League (SAL1)
Hagerstown Suns News Release

The Suns have dropped back-to-back for the second time this year and are sending the rotation around a second time for 2019. RHP Tomas Alastre (0-0, 7.36 ERA) represents the Suns in todays contest, while LHP Ethan Lindow (0-0, 0.00 ERA) will be the first southpaw starter Hagerstown faces this season.

MIDDLE INNING WOES CONTINUE TO HAUNT SUNS: Hagerstown carried a 2-0 lead into the fourth inning last night before suffering another four run frame. The inning essentially knocked starter Joan Adon out of the game and gave the BlueClaws enough runs to fend off a seventh inning rally from the Hagerstown bats. This season, the Suns have been outscored 9-2 in the fourth inning and 16-5 in the fourth-through-sixth innings.

CLOSE, BUT NO CIGAR: Close games have been a staple for the Suns in 2019. Outside of their 6-0 loss to Greensboro April 5, each game has been decided by just one run. In those contests, the Suns are 1-3. Those games have included a walk-off win in the 10th inning from the Grasshoppers and two Suns rallies that were stifled late in ballgames. In the 9-8 opening night loss to Greensboro, the Suns scored two runs in the ninth before dropping the contest.

DROPPING THE SET-UP: The Suns have struggled to get hits with runners in scoring position this season. After going 0-for-5 in Sunday's game, their season average with runners at second or third is .182 (6-for-33). Four of their six hits with runners in scoring position came in 10 opportunities at the plate in Saturday's win.

TWO FOR THE SHOW: Lara's two home runs have both come with two outs and have both given the Suns a one-run lead this year. The third baseman has five RBI on the two bombs and leads the team in the two categories. The righty played 115 games for the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers of the Midwest League in 2018 and hit five homers, so his production has sky-rocketed in the young season.

CASHING IN THE INHERITANCE: When Jackson Stoeckinger stranded two inherited runners in the fifth inning last night, it ended a streak where the Suns bullpen had allowed each inherited runner to score this season. Through four games, Suns relievers have inherited four runners, Chandler Day received one from Tomas Alastre Thursday, Ryan Tapani picked up two from Tim Cate Friday and Carson Teel inherited one from Angel Guillen Sunday, and they have allowed all three inherited runners to score to start the season.

PAT'S BACK: Skipper Patrick Anderson is returning for his sixth season in the Hub City. Anderson has a franchise record 363 wins under his belt and has guided the suns to two playoff berths in his five seasons at the helm. The Maryland-native led the Suns to the 2014 South Atlantic League Championship game in his first season with the team. Prior to his time with Hagerstown, Anderson led the Gulf Coast Nationals to the team's best winning percentage in team history and a league championship.

THE BOYS ARE BACK IN TOWN: There are seven players who have played at least one game donning a Suns uniform on the Opening Day roster. Alastre and Cate in the rotation both finished last season in Hagerstown, while Jackson Stoeckinger and Jhonatan German both logged innings for Hagerstown in 2018 and will be coming out of the pen this season. Nic Perkins played one game for Hagerstown last season before getting injured and spending the rest of the season in Auburn and will return to the Suns this year. Finally, Juan Pascal and Canning are returning in the field for Hagerstown. Both played in more than 10 games for Hagerstown last year.
