Hagerstown Defeated by Hickory 4-1

The Hagerstown Suns (38-36, 2-2) were defeated by the Hickory Crawdads (42-32, 2-2) Sunday afternoon at Municipal Stadium.

Hickory started the first inning with Matthew West reaching on a walk only later to be moved to second after a wild pitch by Josh Smoker. Michael Ortiz singled to right bringing in West giving the Crawdads a 1-0 start.

The Crawdads kept going in the second with a single from Leonel De Los Santos. With bases loaded after Travis Adair hit a ground ball and a walk for Edwin Garcia, Matthew West was walked bringing in De Los Santos. Hickory brought in another run as Garcia scored on a sacrifice fly to center by Miguel Velazquez putting the score 3-0.

In the third for Hickory with Cody Podraza and Joseph Bonadonna on first and second after being walked, Edwin Garcia singled to left bringing in Podraza giving the Crawdads a greater lead 4-0.

Hitting for the Suns was nonexistent until the seventh inning with a triple by Steven Souza. Destin Hood put Hagerstown on the board scoring Souza with a single to left cutting the Hickory lead 4-1.

The starting pitcher for the Suns Josh Smoker (1-8) took the loss pitching three innings giving up four runs. Patrick Arnold pitched another three innings with one strikeout. Paul Applebee came in for the seventh to finish the game with three strikeouts.

Hickorys starting pitcher Robbie Erlin (3-1) got the win pitching six innings giving up no hits and eight strikeouts. Joseph Ortiz came in during the seventh giving up one run. Trevor Hurley got the save pitching during the bottom of the eighth with three strikeouts.

The Suns and the Crawdads will play the last game of their five-game homestand Monday evening at 7:05 p.m.
