Augusta GreenJackets News Release

Kannapolis, NC - The Augusta GreenJackets used four hits in the eighth inning and a go-ahead single by Hector Sanchez to sneak away with a 4-3 win over the Kannapolis Intimidators on Saturday night from Fieldcrest Cannon Stadium.

Trailing 3-2 entering the frame, Ryan Cavan's one-out double turned into a run as a result of a Nick Liles single to center on Liles' only hit of the night. With two on and two outs, Sanchez singled over the outstretched glove of shortstop Rafael Vera to put the Jackets ahead for good. The 4-3 win was just the third time all season the GreenJackets have emerged victorious when trailing after seven innings.

The GreenJackets took an early 2-0 lead on a Ydwin Villegas groundout in the second and a Cavan solo home run in the fourth. Cavan's blast down the left field line wrapped around the foul pole to become his fourth home run of the season.

Kannapolis tied things in the fifth with three straight hits off Jackets starter Andy Reichard. The third of those hits, a single from Jake Oester, brought home the first Intimidators run of the game. The tying run came home from third on a Reichard wild pitch when Kevin Dubler scored to knot things at two apiece.

The Intimidators took their first and only lead of the night in the seventh inning. Dubler singled to open the frame and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. With two outs and a 1-2 count, Rafael Vera doubled over the outstretched glove of right fielder Daniel Cook to score Dubler and give Kannapolis a one-run lead before Augusta retook the lead in the eighth.

Both Reichard and Kannapolis starter Joe Serafin pitched well despite the fact that neither one figured in the decision. Reichard allowed two runs on five hits and two walks in six innings with six strikeouts. Serafin struck out six and allowed two runs - one earned - in six innings on two hits and two walks.

Ryan Verdugo allowed the Vera double in the seventh but benefited from the two-run eighth to get the win. Verdugo (4-1) struck out three and allowed two hits in a two-inning stint to get the victory. Brandon Kloess (1-1) was not only unable to hold the lead in the eighth, but took the loss after allowing a run on four hits over 1.2 innings. Jose Casilla struck out one in a 1-2-3 ninth to earn his third save of the season.

Jeremy Toole (2-3, 2.76) takes the ball for the GreenJackets in the fourth game of the series and will face Kannapolis' Andre Rienzo (0-3, 6.04) on Sunday evening. First pitch will come at 5:05 p.m. with the pregame action beginning at 4:50 p.m. on WRDW AM 1630, www.greenjacketsbaseball.com and www.wrdwam.com.
