Drive Outpace RiverDogs, 5-4

CHARLESTON, SC - Michael Almanzar's eighth-inning RBI double completed Greenville's fourth comeback of the series in a 5-4 triumph over the RiverDogs in front 2,560 fans in South Atlantic League action at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park Sunday evening.

With the victory, Greenville climbs to 4-0 in the second half and 40-34 overall. Charleston drops its eighth straight game for the first time since May 2006, falling to 0-3 in the second half and 31-41 overall.

A 4-4 stalwart lasted until the eighth Bermudez reached on a Rob Lyerly error to open the inning. Almanzar then knocked his double off Charleston reliever Ryan Flannery (5-3), scoring Bermudez from first. Flannery, a 2010 Southern Division All-Star, saw his scoreless streak end at 23 innings dating back to May 18.

Anatanaer Batista pitched 2.0 perfect innings for the Drive, striking out the side in the ninth to record his third save of the season.

Charleston lit the scoreboard early after an hour and 47 minute rain delay when Jimmy Parades' single up the middle brought Slade Heathcott home from second in the bottom of the first, giving the RiverDogs a 1-0 lead. Heathcott walked to open the inning and moved into scoring position on Francisco Santana's sacrifice bunt.

In his first official at-bat as a RiverDog in the third inning, Santana skied a two-run home run over the right field wall against starter Kendal Volz, boosting the Charleston lead to 3-0. Volz worked 4.0 innings in the no-decision, permitting three runs on four hits.

Greenville's bats came alive in the top of the fourth, when the Drive reeled off four consecutive hits to open the frame against Charleston's Mike Solbach. Dan Butler's double to right scored Ronald Bermudez from second to cut the score to 4-1, after Bermudez and Michael Almanzar singled to open the frame.

Vladimir Frias' two RBI single to centerfield kept the hit parade going, plating Almanzar and Butler and knotting the score at 3-3, while a Charleston throwing error allowed Frias to move all the way to third.

Zach Gentile's sacrifice fly pushed Frias home, giving Greenville a 4-3 lead going into the bottom of the fourth.

Parades opened the bottom of the sixth with a double to right and moved to second on Neil Medchill's bloop single. Charleston squared the game at 4-4, when Lyerly's RBI single scored Parades from second.

Charleston starter Michael Solbach went 4.2 innings in a no decision, giving up eight hits and four earned runs, with two strikeouts.

Paredes had two hits for Charleston, while Butler, Almanzar and Derrik Gibson had two apiece for the Drive

The final game of this series is set for Monday at 7:05 p.m., with Charleston pitching right-hander Sean Black (4-6, 4.97) and Greenville countering with right-hander Drake Britton (0-1, 3.52).

-RIVERDOGS- FUN AT THE BALLPARK: It was Dog Day #3, presented by Camp Bow Wow, as well as Charleston County Park & Recreation Commission Family Sunday. The festivities got started early with family pitch in the outfield and Reading with the RiverDogs with Charleston pitcher Ryan Acosta. Before the RiverDogs took the field, the real dogs showed off for the crowd on an agility course.
