Hickory Crawdads News Release
HAGERSTOWN, MD - Hickory Crawdads starter LHP Robbie Erlin began Sunday afternoon's game with six no-hit innings against the Hagerstown Suns, leading Hickory to a 4-1 victory, before 1,162 fans at Municipal Stadium. The 'Dads improve to 2-2 to begin the second half of the season.
Erlin (3-1, 1.34 ERA) opened with five perfect innings, at one point striking out seven Suns in a row, before hitting Hagerstown 1B Brett Newsome to begin the bottom of the sixth inning. Newsome was the only baserunner that Erlin allowed in his six innings, while striking out eight to pick up the win for the Crawdads. Erlin previously threw five perfect frames, in his first start of the season, on May 18 in Kannapolis.
Hickory (42-32) got on the board quickly in the top of the first inning against Suns starter LHP Josh Smoker (1-8, 6.88 ERA). With one out in the inning, 3B Matt West and CF Miguel Velazquez both walked before 1B Mike Ortiz singled home West from second, extending his hitting streak to 11 games and putting the 'Dads up, 1-0.
The Crawdads extended their lead to 3-0 over Hagerstown (38-36) with two more runs in the second. With the bases loaded and one out, West drew a walk to score C Leonel De Los Santos from third. The next batter, Velazquez, then skied a pitch to center field, allowing SS Edwin Garcia to cross the plate on the sac fly.
The 'Dads added a final insurance run in the third inning. After back-to-back walks to DH Cody Podraza and LF Joe Bonadonna, Garcia laced an RBI single to left to plate Podraza from second, putting Hickory up 4-0.
The Suns got their first hit and run of the ballgame in the seventh against Crawdads reliever LHP Joseph Ortiz. After picking up a quick first out, 3B Steven Souza tripled down the left field line for the first hit allowed by a Hickory pitcher in the game. After striking out DH Justin Bloxom for the second out, RF Destin Hood slapped an RBI single to left, scoring Souza and putting Hagerstown on the board, 4-1.
Ortiz dealt 1.2 innings of relief, allowing just the one run and two hits while fanning three. RHP Trevor Hurley followed Ortiz with the final 1.1 scoreless innings, striking out three and walking one to record his eighth save for Hickory. Smoker allowed four runs on four hits and six walks while striking out two in three innings, getting saddled with the loss.
