Augusta GreenJackets News Release
Kannapolis, NC - The Augusta GreenJackets and Kannapolis Intimidators set out to play a baseball game on Sunday afternoon when a football game broke out. When the dust cleared, the Jackets came away with a 17-14 win in a game that saw 31 runs on 42 hits at Fieldcrest Cannon Stadium.
Augusta trailed 14-11 going into the seventh when they busted loose to score the final six runs of the game. Ryan Cavan doubled home a run while Chris Dominguez grounded out to bring another home and shave the Kannapolis lead to a single run in the seventh. Tommy Joseph led off the eighth inning and drilled JR Ballenger's second offering over the left field fence to tie the game at 14-all.
In the ninth, Evan Crawford led off with a walk and moved to third on Nick Liles' one-out single. Dominguez, the team leader in home runs and RBI's, slammed his 11th home run of the year to deep left-center to put the GreenJackets in the lead for the first time since the fourth.
Jose Casilla came on in the ninth and loaded the bases with one out, but got a strikeout and a comebacker to the mound to escape with his fourth save of the year. It was the second straight night the Jackets won a game when trailing after seven innings and only the fourth time all year.
The Jackets led big early, batting around and getting four runs in each of the first two innings. Cavan drilled his second home run of the series in the second to give the Jackets a two-run lead. Luke Anders and Ryan Lollis knocked in runs to push the lead to four. Kannapolis got a run in the first on a groundout, but Anders pushed the lead to seven with a grand slam in the second to make it an 8-1 game. It was the second GreenJackets grand slam this season and Anders' first home run that wasn't a solo shot.
Kannapolis scored six times in the second, sending ten men to the plate to do so, to bring the Augusta lead down to one. Nick Liles singled with Cavan at first in the third inning and both scored when the ball went past right fielder Nick Ciolli and went all the way to the wall. But Kannapolis tied the game at three in the bottom of the third with a Brady Shoemaker solo home run - one of six home runs hit in the game between the two ballclubs - and a two-run Jordan Cheatham single.
In the fourth Augusta grabbed what would be their last lead until the ninth on a two-out double by Ydwin Villegas to go up 11-10. South Atlantic League home run leader Ian Gac led off the fourth by drilling the first pitch from Mitch Lively over the scoreboard beyond the fence in left-center to tie the game at 11. Jose Vargas and Zach Kayne drove in runs to put the Intimidators up a pair while Rafael Vera's RBI single in the sixth pushed the lead to three before the late Augusta heroics.
Hector Correa emerged as Augusta's pitching hero with 2.1 scoreless innings of one-hit baseball. Correa (2-1) retired seven of the eight hitters he faced and struck out a pair. Ballinger (0-2) gets the loss after surrendering four runs on three hits in two innings of work.
Both teams set new season-highs with hits, as the Intimidators and GreenJackets rattled out 21 hits apiece. Augusta's 17 runs is also a new season-high.
The GreenJackets have already clinched the series win and will look to take four of five from Kannapolis on Monday when they send Brian Irving (4-1, 3.92) to the mound in the series finale. He'll face Matt Hopps (1-6, 5.91) of the Intimidators. First pitch will come at 7:05 p.m. with the pregame action beginning at 6:50 p.m. on WRDW AM 1630, www.greenjacketsbaseball.com and www.wrdwam.com.
