July 1, 2010 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Charlotte Checkers News Release
CHARLOTTE, NC-With the dedication of the team's third Habitat for Humanity home Wednesday, the Charlotte Checkers have closed out the ECHL era in giving fashion, donating $240,000 in 2009-10 to local charities and non-profit organizations. The Checkers have now donated more than $1.6 million to the Charlotte community since the summer of 2006.
The Checkers teamed up with Sutter Home Family Vineyards and Empire Distributors, Inc. to help a deserving family realize their dream of being homeowners. On June 18, the team's front office staff spent the day painting the house, providing the finishing touches and helping raise $65 000 for Habitat for Humanity.
The fourth annual "Race Night" was held on Jan. 22 with the help of AutoTrader.com. The Checkers raised $8,000 for Speedway Children's Charities, B.R.A.K.E.S. and USA Hockey Foundation. In conjunction with Joey Logano and Extreme Ice Center, the team donated a portion of jersey auction proceeds to purchase new sleds for the US Paralympic sled hockey team.
Time Warner Cable Arena was painted pink on Mar. 13 for the fourth annual "Pink in the Rink" night. This year's event raised $20,000 for Carolina Breast Friends for their Project Pink House, bringing the four-year total to more than $92,200.
On March 27, the Checkers gave back to the men and women who have given so much for their country. The fifth annual "Salute to Heroes" raised more than $19,000 for the families of the Charlotte Fire Department, Mecklenburg EMS agency, Charlotte Mecklenburg Police Department and Mecklenburg County Sheriff's Office. More than $100,000 has been raised since the event began in 2006.
Other charitable events included "Hockey for Haiti" ($12,000), "Blue Line to Finish Line" ($3,400) at Victory Lane, the inaugural "Pooch Party" ($2,100) benefiting the Humane Society of Charlotte and the eighth annual Charlotte Checkers Golf Classic ($8,500) for Hemby Children's Hospital and Discovery Place.
The Checkers were also able to add donations of more than $81,000 through ticket fundraisers and memorabilia and raised $22,100 during a season-long campaign for the Ellie Shoal Potvin Supplemental Fund.
Season tickets for the Checkers' inaugural 2010-11 AHL season are now on sale and season ticket packages start as low as $10 per game. Ticket information can be obtained by calling 704-342-4-ICE or visiting www.gocheckers.com.
