Senators Sign All-Star and Stanley Cup Winner Sergei Gonchar

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - July 1, 2010) - Ottawa Senators general manager Bryan Murray announced today the club has signed veteran defenceman Sergei Gonchar to a three-year deal.

Gonchar, 36, is a 15-year NHL veteran who played the last five seasons with the Pittsburgh Penguins. In addition to winning the Stanley Cup with the Penguins in 2009, Gonchar has been named to NHL all-star teams twice, participated in NHL all-star games four times, and won two Olympic and world championship medals with Russia.

Durign the 2009-10 season with Pittsburgh, Gonchar led all Penguins defencemen and finished third on the team with 50 points (11 goals, 39 assists), while appearing in 62 games. He also finished third among NHL blueliners with 30 power-play points (six goals, 24 assists).

In 991 regular-season games, Gonchar has recorded 202 goals, 482 assists and 842 penalty minutes, and was the first Russian defenceman to score 200 career NHL goals. Gonchar has recorded 50-point seasons eight times in his career, with career highs of 67 points in 2002-03 with the Capitals and 2006-07 in Pittsburgh. In post-season action, he has 21 goals, 59 assists and 78 penalty minutes over 118 games. He also ranks sixth among active defencemen in career playoff points. During Pittsburgh's Cup-winning season in 2008-09, he ranked second among blueliners with 14 points and tied for second in assists with 11.
