Gwinnett Stripers News Release

The Lead: The Gwinnett Braves crushed the Rochester Red Wings for the second straight night, beating them 10-0 on Friday night at Coolray Field in Lawrenceville, GA to complete their second series sweep of the season. The G-Braves scored in the double digits in back-to-back nights for the first time this season, putting a pair of home runs out from the get-go and never looking back. The G-Braves (50-56) remain 16.0 games behind International League South leaders Durham in last place, and 6.5 games of Wild Card-leader Louisville. Rochester (39-69), also in the bottom of their division, are 23.0 games behind IL North leaders Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

It Was Over When: The G-Braves unveiled their apparent new dynamic duo atop the order, as center fielder Nate McLouth hit a leadoff home run (his second in as many days) and second-slot batter and third baseman Wes Timmons followed with his first-ever homer at Coolray Field in the 1st inning. It was the first time this season the G-Braves have hit back-to-back HRs. Braves pitching prospect Mike Minor looked sharp again, allowing just 1 hit as the team exploded on offense.

Braves Beat:

On the Mound: Starting LHP Minor (4-1) dominated for 7.0 scoreless IP, allowing just 1 hit and 2 walks while striking out 8 batters. RHP Stephen Marek also had another scoreless outing, going 1.0 IP with a strikeout to increase his season-high streak to 24.0 IP without a run.

At the plate: DH Barbaro Canizares knocked in 3 RBI for the second consecutive game, going 1-for-3 with a HR. Timmons finished 4-for-4 with a HR and an RBI. Shortstop Diory Hernandez, activated from the DL today, went 1-for-4 with 2 RBI while left fielder Matt Young was 2-for-4 with 2 RBI. McLouth was 1-for-4 with a HR and an RBI.

The opposition:

On the Mound: Rochester RHP Anthony Swarzak (2-9) went 5.0 IP and allowed 7 R/ER on 8 hits, while walking 3 and allowing 2 homers.

At the plate: Second baseman D'Angelo Jimenez got the only hit off of Minor for Rochester, going 1-for-3.

On Deck: Gwinnett continues their season long 12-day, 12-game homestand tomorrow night, beginning the last series of the span against Toledo at 7:05 p.m. The G-Braves will send RHP Todd Redmond (8-10, 4.40 ERA) to the hill against LHP Ryan Ketchner (3-3, 3.76 ERA) for the Mud Hens. The game will be broadcast on the radio at WDUN-550 AM.

Etc: The Gwinnett Braves Youth Clinic will take place Saturday at Coolray Field at 10 a.m. Wes Timmons, Cory Gearrin, Matt Young and Todd Redmond are scheduled to attend and lead the children in instructional stations that focus on every component of baseball, allowing children to rotate through each station for the complete baseball experience.
