Wheeling Nailers News Release
DULUTH, GA ¬" Goaltender Edward Pasquale made 49 saves to help lead the Gwinnett Gladiators to a 4-3 overtime shootout win over the Wheeling Nailers at The Arena at Gwinnett Center Tuesday night. The win snaps an 11-game winless streak for Gwinnett, while the Nailers pick up a point in the standings to extend their lead in the North Division to four points.
Despite outshooting the Gladiators 18-7 in the opening period, the Nailers found themselves trailing at the end of the first period. Gwinnett took the 1-0 lead into the first intermission, after a power goal by Aaron Bendickson, who poked in a rebound after a faceoff win in the zone.
Wheeling tied the game on the power play just 41 seconds into the second period. Nick Petersen streaked into the zone and fired a wrist shot past Gwinnett neteminder Edward Pasquale. Wheeling took a 2-1 lead at 6:20 of the period when he tipped in an Andrew Orpik shot from the circle. However, 39 seconds later, the Gladiators tied the game at two on Will Colbert's third of the season. Gwinnett converted for the second time on the power play, as Tim Miller tipped one past Nailers goaltender Mike Brown, to give Gwinnett the 3-2 lead at the end of two.
The Nailers tied the game at three, after winning a key faceoff in the offensive zone. Wheeling worked the puck off the draw to Sebastien Bisaillion who fired a slapshot which ripped by Pasquale at 8:46 of the third period. Both goaltenders were solid in the game, making all the clutch saves down the stretch to force overtime.
Neither team could score the deciding marker in the extra session, which sent the game to the overtime shootout. Gwinnett's Andy Brandt scored the lone goal in the shootout to lift Gwinnett to the 4-3 shootout win. Mike Brown made several key saves, stopping 33 shots. Edward Pasquale was tested early and often, making 49 saves as the Nailers outshot the Gladiators 52-36.
Both teams will meet again Wednesday night beginning at 7:00 p.m. Tune into The Mix 97.3, online at wheelingnailers.com, or watch the game on RTV channel 9. The next Nailers home game is Saturday, January 8 against the Reading Royals. To purchase tickets call (304) 234-GOAL.
