The Lead: The Gwinnett Braves beat the Durham Bulls 11-4 at Durham Bulls Athletic Park in Durham, North Carolina Saturday night in game one of the four-game home and home series. The G-Braves banged out a season-high 18 hits in the win and knocked a game off the Bulls lead in the IL South. The Bulls are now 38-25; nine and a half in front of the Braves, who are now 28-34.
It Was Over When: Barbaro Canizares smashed a bases-loaded double to center field in the top of the sixth, clearing the bases and giving the Braves a 10-2 lead.
Braves Beat:
On the Mound: Todd Redmond got his fourth straight win. His line: 5.0 IP, 6H, 3R, 2ER, 2BB, 4K. Stephen Marek worked the sixth and seventh: 2.0 IP, 1BB. Mariano Gomez the eighth: 1.0 IP, 1K and Cory Gearrin the ninth: 1.0 IP, 1H, 1R/ER, 2BB, 1K.
At the plate: Canizares went 4-for-6 with three doubles and five RBIs. Wes Timmons was also 4-for-6 with 2 RBIs and three runs scored. Freddie Freeman and Matt Young each had three hits. Clint Sammons and Luis Bolivar each had two hits.
The opposition:
On the Mound: RHP Richard De Los Santos was tagged with the loss. His line: 5.1 IP, 11H, 10R, 8ER, 2BB, 7K. Brian Bakers replaced De Los Santos in the sixth: 1.1 IP, 4H, 1R/ER, 1BB, 3K. Mike Ekstrom replaced Baker in the seventh: 1.1 IP, 1H, 0R/ER, 1BB, 1K. Winston Abreu worked the ninth: 1.0 IP, 2H, 1K.
At the plate: Desmond Jennings went 2-for-4 as did Ryan Shealy who also hit his 10th homerun of the season. A solo shot off Redmond leading off the 6th.
On Deck: The Braves and Bulls play game two of the series tomorrow night at Durham Bulls Athletic Park. First pitch at 5:05 p.m. LHP Jose Ortegano (2-1, 4.55 ERA) is scheduled to start for the Braves. Durham will start LHP Carlos Hernandez (4-3, 3.21 ERA).
