Arkansas Travelers News Release
Wolff Stadium, San Antonio, TX - Jesus Guzman doubled in the winning run in the eighth inning to give the San Antonio Missions (8-13) a 3-2 victory over the Arkansas Travelers (9-12). After driving in the winning run on Thursday, Guzman knocked in pinch runner Sebastien Boucher with a hard grounder that bounced off 3B Matt Brown. The Travelers committed four errors in dropping their tenth game in 13 tries. The Travs had a 2-1 lead after rallying in the top of the seventh inning, but Michael Garciaparra tied the game with a sacrifice fly for his second RBI of the night. Arkansas RHP James Holcomb was outstanding in a no-decision holding the Missions to two runs on five hits, two walks and a season-high eight strikeouts. Travs LHP Tim Bittner (2-1) took the loss pitching just the eighth inning, while San Antonio RHP Nate Mateo (1-2) got the win with 1.1 shutout relief innings. RHP Job Huber (5) saved the game with a shutout ninth. The Travs were led by Mike Eylward and Eric Rodland who each recorded three hits. The Travelers are 7-6 in one-run games.
Holcomb issued a leadoff walk to Jason Bourgeois in the third inning. After stealing second base, Bourgeois scored when Garciaparra lined a single to right field for a 1-0 Missions lead.
San Antonio RHP Yorman Bazardo dominated the Travs over six innings allowing just two Eylward singles while whiffing seven. However he walked Eylward with one out in the seventh and allowed consecutive singles to Bobby Wilson and Jason Aspito to load the bases. Eylward scored to tie the game at 1-1 when Porter reached first base on a fielder's choice with Aspito forced out at second. Rodland then delivered a go-ahead single to center field to score Wilson for a 2-1 Travs lead.
Holcomb put Ozzie Navarro on base with one out by clipping his jersey with a fastball. A hit-and-run single by Bourgeois moved Navarro to third base with one out. Garciaparra then hit his game-tying sacrifice fly.
Bittner struck out Wladimir Balentien to start the eighth inning, but Bryan Lahair then tapped slowly to third base. Brown charged and stumbled as he fielded the ball slowing his throw to first base allowing Lahair to reach on the single. When Gary Harris bounced out to second base Lahair reached second and was removed for the pinch runner Boucher. On a full count Guzman hit a hard grounder to Brown, but the ball ricocheted off his leg into the outfield allowing Boucher to score the winning run.
Time of game was 2:32 and the paid attendance was 4,049
The Travs and Missions wrap up this four-game series on Saturday night. Arkansas has RHP Rafael Rodriguez (0-0, 6.00 ERA) taking on San Antonio LHP Jason Mackintosh (1-0, 4.35 ERA). First pitch will be tossed at 7:05 p.m.
