April 28, 2006 - Texas League (TL1)
Springfield Cardinals News Release

The Corpus Christi Hooks contained the Springfield bats for the second time in three days, beating the Cardinals 6-2 on Friday night at Whataburger Field in Corpus Christi. Springfield had just two runs on six hits on Friday, two days after being held to a season-low one run in Wednesday's loss.

Corpus Christi starter Matt Albers (3-1) was solid on Friday, picking up the win. Albers struggled early with his control, but settled down to hold Springfield to one run on four hits over six innings.

The Hooks scored first, grabbing a 1-0 second inning lead. John Fagan led off the inning with a wind-aided double, as the 35 MPH winds played with the baseball all night. Josh Anderson's two-out RBI single plated Fagan, putting the Hooks in front 1-0.

The Cards got their only run against Albers in the third, tying the game at 1-1. Mike McCoy led off the inning with a double, and after stealing third with no outs, had to wait until Nick Stavinoha's two-out RBI single brought him home. McCoy finished the game with two hits and two stolen bases, giving him seven on the season.

Corpus Christi took the lead for good with a run in the third and three more in the fourth. Leading 3-1 in the fourth, Josh Bonifay capped the three-run inning with a two-run homer to center field, his fifth of the year, making it 5-1.

The Cards got a run back in the top of the eighth, as Iker Franco's two-out single plated Cody Haerther, making it 5-2.

Corpus got an insurance run against Chris Russ in the eighth though, as Josh Anderson's infield ground-out brought home another run as the Hooks took a 6-2 lead.

That would be enough, as Jailen Peguero closed out the Cards in the ninth, getting around a lead-off walk issued to Juan Richardson, who was one of eight Cardinals left stranded on base.

Cards starter Chris Lambert (2-2) suffered the loss on Friday, allowing five runs in just four innings of work. Two defensive errors led to a pair of unearned runs given up by Lambert though.

Springfield still has the best record in the Texas League, but falls to 14-8 on the year. The Cardinals send Stuart Pomeranz (2-0) to the mound on Saturday night in the series finale. Corpus Christi will go with right-hander Mitch Talbot (1-1), with game time from Whataburger Field at 7:05. The Cardinals will return to Hammons Field on Thursday, May 4th, as they open up a seven-game home stand against Corpus Christi and San Antonio.
