Corpus Christi Hooks News Release
(CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas) - Hooks starter Matt Albers won his third straight decision on Friday night in front 7,175 enthusiastic fans at Whataburger Field as the Hooks took care of the Springfield Cardinals 6-2.
Albers struggled a little with control early on, walking one in the first and two in the second, but found his rhythm and walked only one batter over the next four frames. Springfield pieced together their only run off Albers in the third when shortstop Mike McCoy led off the inning with a double, stole third, then scored on an RBI single by Nick Stavinoha, tying up the game 1-1. Albers finished the game with four strikeouts.
The Hooks scored their first run in the bottom of the second when Hooks center fielder Josh Anderson singled in John Fagan. Fagan got the inning started with a double, then advanced to third on a wild pitch from Cardinals starter Chris Lambert. They then added a run in the third when Josh Bonifay hit a one out double to left and scored off a groundball from Jorge Cortes that Cardinal second baseman Jarrett Hoffpauir couldn't handle.
The boys then put the game out of reach in the third when Hunter Pence hit an RBI double to score Josh Anderson, who reached on a throwing error, and was followed by a monster home run from Bonifay to put the Hooks up 5-1. The home run was Bonifay's second in as many days and his fifth of the year. Bonifay and Pence both finished the game with two hits.
Hooks pinch-hitter Derek Nicholson's double in the eighth marked the first time in franchise history the Hooks put together five doubles in a single game. Bonifay's blast also set a new season team high for consecutive games with a homer as they now have three.
The Hooks will finish up the four game series on Saturday when Astros throwback hats, presented by IBC, will be handed out to the first 2,500 fans. Starting for the Hooks will be RHP Mitch Talbot (1-1, 4.15) while RHP Stuart Pomeranz (2-0, 4.64) will take the mound for the Cardinals. Gates open at 5:30 pm with first pitch scheduled for 7:05 pm.
