San Diego Gulls News Release

SAN DIEGO -- It's always a good time for the San Diego Gulls when the Anchorage Aces come to town. Mark Pederson netted four goals, while Cory Cyrenne and Clayton Read chipped in with five points as the Gulls scorched Anchorage 9-1 Tuesday night, before 3,946 at the Sports Arena.

Cris Classen, filling in for an injured Trevor Koenig, was no slouch either. San Diego's back-up netminder stopped 27 shots en route to his fifth win.

With the shellacking, the Gulls take sole possession of third place and move to within one point of the idle Bakersfield Condors. The Gulls and Condors square off tomorrow night at Centennial Garden.

San Diego (28-15-3) jumped out to a 2-0 lead with a pair of goals late in the opening period. Pederson got things started with a power-play marker at 16:41. Cyrenne fed the point to an open Read, who's one-timer was tipped in by Pederson for his first of the night. Trevor Sherban buried his seventh at 19:34 to give the Gulls a two-goal cushion. R.J. Enga grabbed the puck along the half boards and fed a streaking Sherban, who skated in all alone against Ryan Person.

Pederson gave the Gulls a commanding 4-0 advantage with two more tallies early in the second period. He potted his second of the game just 22 seconds into the frame off a feed from Read. Some three minutes later Pederson completed the hat trick, one-timing a blast from the slot.

The Gulls kept pouring it on, scoring yet two more in the middle period. Enga, left unoccupied in the slot, wristed home his 21st tally past a bewildered Person at 4:46. Sylvain Deschatelets got into the act with his 16th goal at 7:47, walking in uncontested against Person.

The lone Anchorage (12-26-2) highlight came on Yvan Corbin's league-leading 33rd goal 3:47 into the third stanza. Dean Larson skated to the right circle and flung a pass to Corbin, who one-timed it past Classen. With the goal, Corbin extended his goal-scoring streak to seven games and his point streak to 10 games.

Pederson grabbed his fourth of the night - 27th on the year - at 12:21, flipping in a rebound off Jamie Black's rocket from the top of the slot. Cyrenne continued the barrage with his ninth about two minutes later. Ashlee Langdone finished San Diego's scoring with his first goal at 15:49.

Read (0g, 5a) and Cyrenne (1g, 4a) finished the game with five points apiece. Pederson (4g, 0a) and Enga (1g, 3a) had four-point nights.
