Guelph Tops Owen Sound in Shootout

Owen Sound Attack News Release

The Owen Sound Attack and Guelph Storm needed a shootout to settle things when the Midwest Division rivals met on Friday, Jan. 15.

After the Attack scored three goals in the span of 2:30 in the first period, the teams would head to the shootout tied 3-3 before Guelph's Nicholas Sicoly scored in the 9th round to give the Storm a 4-3 victory.

Owen Sound scored three times early in the game to jump out to a 3-1 advantage but were felled by a rash of penalties in the 2nd period that allowed the Storm to crawl back into the action.

The two teams traded early powerplay opportunities, but after killing off an Attack Baywest Nissan Powerplay, it would be the Storm who took advantage of their early opportunity.

With 6:45 gone in the opening frame, Givani Smith would fire a shot on goal from an awkward angle, beating Michael McNiven between the pad and the post to give the home side the 1-0 lead.

Only 70 seconds would elapse before Owen Sound struck back though.

After Ethan Szypula won a side board battle, the Attack's leading goal scorer would find a wide open Petrus Palmu in the slot, and the Finnish import would make no mistake with a snapshot that beat Storm goalie Michael Giugovaz over the glove.

A tilt between Owen Sound's Tyler MacArthur and Guelph's Levi Tetrault less than a minute after the Attack's first goal of the game would then appear to give the visitors momentum.

Santino Centorame would put the Bears up 2-1 after finishing off a pretty passing play at 9:46 of the period, just 30 seconds before Szypula scored his 12th goal of the year to give the Attack a two goal lead.

Overage forwards Bryson Cianfrone and Josh Sterk would assist on Centorame's goal, his 10th of the season, while Nick Suzuki and Jacob Friend registered the helpers on Szypula's goal.

Guelph would eventually cut into Owen Sound's two goal lead, scoring at the 6:47 mark of the 2nd period.

With the Attack on their 5th straight Paul Davis Systems Penalty Kill, Luke Burghardt of the Storm was able to stuff home a rebound on the edge of the Owen Sound crease.

That would be the only goal scored in the middle stanza, thanks in large part to a handful of 10-bell saves by Guelph's Giugovaz, who kept the Attack snipers from blowing the game open a number of times late in the 2nd.

Guelph would then tie the game up thanks to a James McEwan shorthanded goal in the first half of the 3rd period. With 5:44 gone in the final frame, McEwan forced a turnover at the Storm blueline and went in on a breakaway before scoring to make it a 3-3 contest.

That shorthanded goal would be enough to force overtime and get the Storm at least a point after the home side trailed 3-1 early on in the game.

Guelph would then come all the way back to capture a full two points after Nicholas Sicoly scored the shootout's only goal in the 9th round, giving the Storm the 4-3 win.

Ethan Szypula was named the Mac Taylor Corporation 2nd Star of the Game while Guelph's Michael Giugovaz picked up 1st star honours thanks to his 37 save performance. Givani Smith rounded out the stars on the evening, picking up 3rd star.

The Mark McDade Remax Shots on Goal finished at 40-25 in favour of the Attack on the night.

Owen Sound will now return home for a pair of games against the Erie Otters at 7:30pm on Saturday, Jan. 16 and 2:00pm on Sunday, Jan. 17.

Tickets for both games can be purchased at the DJ's Furniture Attack Box Office, online at www.attackhockey.com, or by calling 519-371-7452.

Fans are reminded that Sunday's game is presented by Investment Planning Counsel, and the first 200 children through the doors will receive a free bag of popcorn. There are also jersey giveaways throughout the afternoon, and following the game there will be a post game skate and autograph session with the players.
