Attack Alumni Record NHL Firsts
January 15, 2016 - Ontario Hockey League (OHL)
Owen Sound Attack News Release
It was a banner week in the National Hockey League for three Owen Sound Attack alumni.
Franchise leaders Chris Bigras and Jordan Binnington both made their NHL debuts on Thursday, Jan. 14 while former Attack forward Joseph Blandisi was able to record his first career NHL point on Tuesday, Jan. 12.
Bigras was called up to the Avs from the San Antonio Rampage on Wednesday, and made his debut with the big club on Thursday night as Colorado took on Blandisi and the New Jersey Devils. Even though he didn't record a point in his debut, Bigras was able to get onto the game sheet by way of a hooking penalty late in the first period.
The battle of former teammates ended in a 3-0 victory for Bigras and the Avalanche over Blandisi's Devils.
While Owen Sound's franchise leader in points by a defenceman was enjoying his first of many NHL games, the Attack's leader in wins by a goaltender was being called into action as a backup.
With almost 12 minutes left in the contest between the St. Louis Blues and the Carolina Hurricanes on Thursday evening, Jordan Binnington was brought into the Blues' goal in relief of starter Brian Elliot.
Binnington made three saves on four shots he faced in his debut as the Blues were felled by the Canes by a score of 4-1.
Earlier in the week, Blandisi recorded his first career point in the NHL by registering an assist in the Devils' 5-2 loss to the St. Louis Blues.
The three former Attack who made an impact in the NHL this past week combined to play 496 games for Owen Sound.
Bigras, who played in the Scenic City from 2011-2015, appeared in 234 games for the Attack where he recorded 35 goals and 120 assists en route to becoming the team's all time leader in points by a defenceman. He also recorded four goals and nine assists in 27 playoff tilts.
Binnington's career with the Attack stretched from 2009-2013 and saw him help bring an Ontario Hockey League championship back to the Bayshore as a member of the J. Ross Robertson Cup winning team in 2011. Binnington's record of 86-51-3-11 in 157 games played is a franchise record for wins.
Blandisi appeared in 105 contests for Owen Sound over a season and a half beginning in 2011, and in his time with the Attack he recorded 25 goals and 32 assists.
The Owen Sound Attack would like to congratulate Chris, Jordan, and Joseph on their accomplishments and wish them luck moving forward with their NHL careers.
