Greenville Grrrowl News Release
GREENVILLE, SC - The Greenville Grrrowl have sent two more players to the NHL, as MIKE MORRISON and MARTIN ST. PIERRE both recently made their NHL debuts. Since Greenville's inaugural season of 1998-99, the Grrrowl have sent seven players to the NHL: Morrison, St. Pierre, Scott Fankhouser, Luke Sellars, Simon Gamache, Zdenek Blatny, and Michael Garnett.
MORRISON, who was recalled to Edmonton on October 24, played the final 18:12 of the Oilers' 4-0 loss at Dallas last night and made three saves. He is the fifth former ECHL player in the last four days to make his NHL debut and the 18th former ECHL player that has played his first NHL game in 2005-06, bringing the total number of players who have played in the NHL after the ECHL to 274.
Selected in the seventh round (186th overall) by Edmonton in the 1998 NHL Entry Draft, Morrison served as the backup goaltender for the Oilers during the first week of the NHL season before returning to Greenville where he is 1-1-0 with a goals-against average of 3.01 and a save percentage of .895 in two games.
In 2004-05, the 26-year-old was 13-10-2 with a shutout, a goals-against average of 2.74 and a save percentage of .924 in 26 games with Greenville and 2-5-5 with two shutouts, a goals-against average of 1.73 and a save percentage of .939 in 14 games with Edmonton of the American Hockey League.
The 22-year-old ST. PIERRE played for Chicago on Friday, November 4, winning four faceoffs in 15 shifts, in a 9-1 loss at Dallas. The Emburn, Ontario native had one shot in a 2-1 overtime win against Phoenix last Sunday.
In his first professional season in 2004-05, St. Pierre was selected to the ECHL All-Star Game and had 53 points (14g-39a) and 55 penalty minutes in 45 regular season games for Greenville. He ranked third in assists and ninth in scoring among league rookies, and added seven points (2g-5a) and six penalty minutes in seven Kelly Cup Playoff games for the Grrrowl. The 5-9, 180-pound center also played in the AHL for Edmonton where he scored a goal in his first game and had seven points (4g-3a) in 18 games.
