Grizzlies Walk-Off After McClain's 14th Inning Blast
July 21, 2007 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Fresno Grizzlies News Release
Fresno, CA - It was a classic back and forth battle, but in the end, it was the Fresno Grizzlies who came away with the series opening victory over the Colorado Springs Sky Sox thanks to Scott McClain's huge walk-off home run in the bottom of the 14th inning.
The two teams battled throughout the game as each team held the lead at least two times in the game, with the Grizzlies eventually pulling ahead for good, 6-5.
For McClain, it was his 24th home run of the season and part of huge home run binge he and the Grizzlies have been on in the past 11 games. It was also McClain's sixth home run in his last 11 games, with the latest the most pleasing to the 7,877 fans in attendance.
The Grizzlies took charge early on in the game, thanks to a three-run home run off the bat of outfielder Dan Ortmeier, his ninth homer of the season. Setting the table for Ortmeier was leadoff man Clay Timpner, who singled to extend his streak of reaching base safely in all home games with a plate appearance to 33.
But Colorado Springs rebounded by jumping on the back of first baseman Joe Koshansky, who accounted for two of the four runs that put the Sky Sox in the lead after a one-run second inning and three-run third inning.
Koshansky had a hot bat for most of the night, as he finished 3 for 5 with a double, two home runs and three runs scored. He also knocked in three Sky Sox runners.
The surprise of the night came from the Grizzlies' William Bergolla, who hit his first home run of the season-in the Grizzlies' 100th game of the season-in the third inning of the game. Of the position players currently on the Fresno roster, Bergolla was the lone one without a home run.
Saturday's second game of the series between the Grizzlies and Sky Sox will have an exciting line-up for Grizzlies fans. The first 2,500 people to the game will receive a free Parker Coin Bank (presented by Educational Employees Credit Union). Following the game, the Grizzlies will hold the World's Biggest Water Fight, as kids 12 and under will be invited to go on the field and participate in the fun.
Tickets are available at the Chukchansi Park ticket office, over the phone at 559-320-TIXS, or online at www.fresnogrizzlies.com.
