Tucson Sidewinders News Release

Portland, OR - Robby Hammock snapped a scoreless tie with a solo home run to left in the bottom of the seventh inning and Casey Daigle combined with the bullpen on a shutout as the Sidewinders beat the Portland Beavers 3-0 on Saturday night at PGE Park.

Daigle tossed the first six innings and allowed just four hits. He walked three and struck out six. Jailen Peguero worked the seventh and the eighth in 1-2-3 fashion and Randy Choate earned his third save of the year by retiring the side on one hit in the ninth.

Steve Watkins took the loss for Portland. Watkins (2-2) allowed two runs on seven hits while walking three.

Watkins started the seventh inning by retiring Jeff Salazar on a fly ball to the warning track in left, but Hammock launched his ball high over the left field wall and into the bleachers to give Tucson a 1-0 lead. After Brian Barden singled and Matt Erickson walked, Aaron Rakers came on and gave up a base hit to Alberto Callaspo to load the bases, and then threw a wild pitch to allow Barden to score.

Tucson added an insurance run in the ninth as Hammock led off with a double and scored on Callaspo's base hit to left with two out.

Portland had a chance to score against Daigle in the first as Drew Macias doubled and Craig Stansberry singled but Carlos Quentin threw Macias out at the plate on a perfect throw to Hammock.

The Sidewinders and Beavers play game three of their series on Sunday afternoon at PGE Park. Left-hander Bill Murphy (1-1, 3.65) starts for Tucson against right-hander Mike Thompson (2-8, 6.78) for Portland. First pitch is at 2:05. The game will air live on COOL 1450 beginning at 1:50.
