Daigle, Sidewinders Come Out On Top In Pitchers Duel
July 21, 2007 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Portland Beavers News Release
PORTLAND, Ore. - Casey Daigle struck out six over six scoreless innings to out-duel his counterpart Steve Watkins, and Alberto Callaspo had four hits as the Tucson Sidewinders defeated the Portland Beavers 3-0 before 6,568 Saturday night at PGE Park.
Robby Hammock was 3-for-4 with a double, a home run and two runs scored for the Sidewinders, who handed the Beavers their sixth straight loss.
It was just the third shutout loss of the season for the Beavers, their first since May 12 at Round Rock.
Daigle (8-2) issued three walks and limited the Beavers (41-60) to just four hits in his time on the mound. Daigle has won his last four decisions and seven of his last eight.
A scoreless affair through six, Hammock belted a convincing solo homer over the wall in left for Tucson in the seventh. The Sidewinders (53-48) eventually loaded the bases in the inning, and Brian Barden scored from third on a wild pitch to make it 2-0.
Watkins (2-2), making his third spot start of the season for the Beavers, gave up Hammock's homer and was charged with two runs, giving up seven hits over 6 1/3 innings, his longest outing of the season.
The Sidewinders added an insurance run in the top of the ninth as Hammock led off with a double and scored on a two-out RBI single by Callaspo.
Randy Choate notched his third save of the season by working the ninth.
The Beavers play host to the Sidewinders again Sunday at 2:05 p.m.
NOTES: Portland center fielder Yordany Ramirez made a highlight-reel grab in the first inning, chasing down a deep liner off the bat of Chris Carter and banging into the wall to save a run with the final out of the inning; he followed with an equally impressive diving catch in the fifth ... left fielder Peter Ciofrone saved another run with a sliding catch in the top of the ninth ... Craig Stansberry has drawn at least one walk in each of his last nine games ... iconic animated hero Homer Simpson was on hand to throw out the first pitch and entertain the crowd with his couch-potato antics ... Daigle struck out four straight at one point early in the game and his replacement, Jailen Peguero, struck out four in a row over the seventh and eighth innings. The pair combined to strike out 10 Portland batters.
