
Grizzlies Take First Of Three From Rascals

SAUGET, IL-Justin Lilly tossed eight innings allowing two runs on four hits as the Gateway Grizzlies took game one of a three game series 7-3 Tuesday night. The win came in front of 3,806 at GCS Ballpark.
Lilly struck out four and walked two in the win.
The Rascals (20-20) jumped out to a 1-0 lead on A.J. Van Slyke's sixth home run of the year in the fourth that put River City up 1-0.
The Grizzlies (21-19) answered with three runs in the bottom of the inning. Mike Breyman and Stephen Holdren each drove in runs with RBI doubles. John Alonso singled to make it 3-1 Grizzlies.
Luke Barganier singled in the fifth to cut the lead to 3-2, but that is as close as the Rascals would get.
Ryne Malone singled for the Grizzlies in the fifth to put them up 4-2. A Rascals' error in the sixth made it 5-2 Grizzlies. Malone would seal the win in the seventh.
After Robbie Minor reached on an error, then advanced to second on anther error, Malone lined the first pitch he saw from Rascals' starter Danny Powers over the right field lawn, making it 7-2 Grizzlies.
Malone finished 3-3 with the homer and three RBIs.
The Rascals' would add a run in the top of the ninth. Van Slyke doubled to lead off the inning, then scored on a sacrifice fly by Andrew Sweet.
Powers took the loss for the Rascals going six-plus innings. He allowed all seven runs, only four earned, on nine hits. He struck out nine.
The loss for the Rascals knocks them out of first place. The Grizzlies are at worst tied for first place in the West.
The Grizzlies and Rascals continue the series with a 7:05 p.m. game Wednesday night at GCS Ballpark.
