Utah Grizzlies News Release

West Valley City, Utah - The Grizzlies started a new home winning streak after their seven game home unbeaten streak was snapped on Thursday night at the hands of the Moose. Tonight, the Grizzlies capitalized on several untimely penalties called against the Moose cashing in with four power play goal defeating Manitoba 6-2 in front of 5,955 fans at the E-Center.

In the first period, Utah took advantage of a 5 on 3 power play. After several chances in the offensive zone Jim Montgomery, sitting just off of the far side of the crease redirected a pass from Jon Sim into the net to give Utah an early one-goal advantage. Just over three minutes later Montgomery was in the heat of the action again as he forced a turnover at neutral ice that Jon Sim took uncontested into the net putting Utah ahead 2-0. Manitoba drew within one when Rene Vydareny got his first goal of the year from Pat Kavanagh and Brian Chapman at 11:38 of the period.

The second period saw David Gosselin snatch up a rebound off of a shot by Steve Gainey and deposited it into the net from the near side of the goal to give Utah their two goal lead back. Following a slashing penalty by Jim Montgomery late in the period, Grizzlies Coach Don Hay's son Darrell got his name in the scoring column on a breakaway goal from Chapman and Jeff Farkas with just 13.8 seconds left in the period cutting the Grizzlies lead again to just one goal, 3-2, after two periods.

In the third period the Grizzlies broke open the scoring with three power play goals (Sim, Eric Landry, and Marcus Kristoffersson) that would give them the 6-2 victory.

The Grizzlies out shot the team from up north 36 to 28 while going an incredible 4/8 on the power play with a shorthanded goal. Manitoba, however, was less than spectacular going 1/7 in the game and 1/12 in the two game series. The lone power play goal by the Moose did snap a string of 23 straight kills for the Grizzly penalty killing unit.

Utah has five days off before hitting the road Friday for a two game swing in San Antonio and Chicago. All games can be heard on ESPN Radio 1230 AM.
