Steelheads Rumble over Falcons

BOISE, Idaho - The Idaho Steelheads completed a two-game sweep over the Fresno Falcons Saturday night with a 4-2 win before a crowd of 4,941 at the Bank of America Centre.

The teams played a physical game marked by 97 penalty minutes and 53 shots. Idaho's netminder Jason Cugnet picked up his 17th win on the season with his 25 stops.

The Steelheads got on the board first with a shot from Scott Burt that slipped between Falcons' goaltender Terry Friesen's legs. The unassisted goal came at 2:39 of the first period. Less than two minutes later Adam Copeland scored his third of the year. Dan Shermerhorn and Petr Suchanek recorded the assists. The Steelheads skated with the 2-0 lead until Fresno closed the gap at 14:51 with a goal by Drew Schoneck. Jason Weaver and Kris Porter each got assists on the tally.

The Falcons' Kris Porter tied the game with his 14th goal of the year at 8:23 of the second period. Jason Weaver got his second point of the night with the assist. Idaho had a two-man advantage midway through the period, but couldn't capitalize. However, the Steelheads would get the go-ahead goal from Petr Suchanek who took the puck in from center ice and scored with a blast at 14:57 to end the period with the Steelheads up 3-2.

Though Fresno started the third period on the power play, and had two more opportunities during the period they were unable to score. The Steelheads did tally another however when Marty Flichel, the WCHL's leading goal scorer, got his 19th at 11:27, assisted by Copeland.

With tonight's win, the Steelheads improve their league-leading record to 24-7-3, 51 points.

Next up, the Steelheads take on the second-place Gulls in San Diego for a three-game series on January 7th, 10th and 11th.
