August 13, 2015 - ECHL (ECHL)
Utah Grizzlies News Release
West Valley City, Utah - Utah Grizzlies Head Coach/General Manager Tim Branham announced today that the team has re-signed forwards Barry Almeida and T.J. Syner for the 2015-2016 season.
The two cousins return to Utah for their second seasons. Both are natives of Springfield, Massachusetts and will begin their fourth of five pro seasons playing together. Both players won the ECHL's Kelly Cup with Branham in Reading, Pennsylvania in 2013. Almeida played college hockey at Boston College, while Syner played at U-Mass Amherst.
Almeida had 13 goals and 27 assists for 40 points in 55 games last year before suffering a season ending injury in March. 18 of his 40 points in 2014-2015 were scored on the power-play. He led the Grizzlies in special teams scoring.
"Barry had a very good year for us last season," said Branham. "We definitely missed him in the playoffs and we are looking forward to seeing him healthy this season."
Syner had 15 goals and 16 assists for 31 points in 45 games. He had two goals and six assists for eight points in 11 playoff games for the Grizzlies. Syner scored 10 of his 14 goals in the second half of the season in 2014-2015.
"TJ was one of our best players down the stretch and in the playoffs," said Branham. "His speed is tough for the opposition to deal with. We are happy to have him back."
Syner has 43 goals and 51 assists for 94 points in 117 career ECHL games with Reading and Utah. He has played in 48 AHL games with Hershey totaling five goals and five assists.
Almeida has 38 goals and 52 assists for 90 points in 129 career ECHL games with Reading, Cincinnati and Utah. He has totaled seven goals and eight assists for 15 points in 36 AHL games with Hershey.
The Grizzlies home opening weekend is Friday, October 23 and Saturday, October 24 against the Allen Americans.
