Grizzlies offense hits rock bottom

The Utah Grizzlies finished up their season-long road trip this past weekend with a pair of games at the Blue Cross Arena in Rochester against one of the hottest teams in the AHL, the Americans. On Friday night, the Grizzlies scored the first goal of the game in the second period on the power play when Kiel McLeod jammed home a rebound off a Keith Ballard shot. Terry Virtue also gained an assist on the Utah lone goal. David LeNeveu made 40 saves as the Grizzlies were outshot 44-23. Former Grizzly Chris Taylor scored a second period shorthanded goal tying the game and in the third period Jason Pominville, Thomas Vanek and Chris Thorburn scored for the Amerks winning their fifth straight game and sending Utah to their seventh straight loss. On Sunday, Kiel McLeod once again scored the first goal and Utah led 1-0 after 20 minutes but Rochester scored three straight goal taking a 3-1 lead (Norm Milley, Chris Thorburn and Jeff Hutchins scored for Rochester). In the final five minutes there was loads of fireworks as Utah's Jarrod Skalde scored his sixth goal of the season on the power play cutting the lead to one for the Amerks. Utah then received a major penalty power play and finished the game with a two-man advantage . In between the penalties, the Amerks received a penalty shot, the first since late February against Utah who had turned aside six straight penalty shots. Milan Bartovic took the crack at David LeNeveu who turned the shot away and for the game stopped 34 shots.

GATHER WITH THE GRIZZLIES READING PROGRAM STARTS THIS WEEK:

~For the second consecutive year, the Utah Grizzlies and the Salt Lake County Library have partnered up for "Gather with the Grizzlies". Doug Doull is set to visit the Smith Library on Tuesday, January 18th and other Grizzlies will visit the Sandy Library on Tuesday and the Holladay Library on Wednesday. POWER PLAY FINALLY COMES ALIVE:

~The Grizzlies drew blanks for 25 straight power play chances on their road trip miss-firing in six straight games before heading into Rochester where the team went 3 for 12 (25%). Kiel McLeod scored two power play goals tying him for the team lead with four on the season and Jarrod Skalde netted one in the third period of Utah's 3-2 loss in Rochester on Sunday.

ROAD TRIP TO FORGET:

~The Grizzlies wrapped up their season-long eight game road trip on Sunday with a 3-2 loss to Rochester. In the journey, the Grizzlies led just twice and were outscored 33-7 being shutout three times. Kiel McLeod and Peter Metcalf each scored twice on the journey. Overall, the Grizzlies have lost a franchise record nine straight games away from home and eight straight games overall.

HOMESTAND STARTS ON FRIDAY:

~The Grizzlies begin a six-game home stand on Friday night when they host the Cleveland Barons in the first of back-to-back games. The re-match will be on Saturday night when the Grizzlies will host their third annual "Guns & Hoses Hockey Game" pitting the Fire Department versus the Police Department at 4:00 PM at the ‘E' Center. A special $10.00 ticket is available that gains admittance to both games. The Grizzlies game is scheduled to face-off at 7:05 PM.
