Bridgeport Islanders News Release
LOWELL, MA - The American Hockey League's Bridgeport Sound Tigers, top affiliate of the National Hockey League's New York Islanders, lost 3-1 on the road Sunday to the Lowell Lock Monsters.
Lowell led 1-0 after an up-and-down first period as Ryan Bayda blasted a clean face-off win by Mike Zigomanis past Sound Tigers goaltender Dieter Kochan with 1:12 left in the opening frame. Zigomanis earned the only assist on the goal, which was Bayda's eighth of the season.
The Lock Monsters led 2-1 after two periods after the teams traded goals in the middle frame. Bruno St. Jacques doubled Lowell's lead to 2-0 with his second goal of the season at the 9:15 mark off an assist from Justin Taylor, but Ryan Caldwell put the Sound Tigers on the scoreboard with the first goal of his professional career off assists from Steve Regier and Eric Godard with 3:27 left in the period. Caldwell scored just one second after the second penalty of a five-on-three power play expired.
Lowell's Chuck Kobasew gave the Lock Monsters some breathing room at 3-1 by scoring his team-leading 22nd goal of the season 3:06 in to the third period. Kobasew drove through the slot where he was set up by Eric Staal who was behind the net with Mike Commodore also assisting on the play.
The Sound Tigers pulled Kochan in favor of an extra attacker inside the final minute of play but could not score.
Kobasew was the first star of the game, Lowell netminder Cam Ward the second and St. Jacques the third. Ward made 29 saves while Kochan made 28 as the Lock Monsters had a 31-30 shots on goal advantage. Both teams were 0 for 5 on the power play.
