June 9, 2006 - Frontier League (FL)
Gateway Grizzlies News Release
The Gateway Grizzlies (8-7) scored 11 runs for the second night in a row, and needed every run as they hold on to defeat the Rockford RiverHawks (9-6) 11-10 Friday night at GCS Ballpark. The win came in front of 4,673 fans, the second largest crowd of the season.
Jason Arrowood led the Grizzlies offensive attack. On a night the club hit four home runs, Arrowood had two of them, including a grand slam.
With the Grizzlies trailing 6-2 and the bases loaded in the sixth, Arrowood lined a pitch from Rockford reliever Adam Kroft into the right field lawn to make it a 6-6 game. The slam was Arrowood's first home run of the year.
It stayed 6-6 until the seventh and it was Arrowood again who came through in the clutch. With two outs and Mike Breyman at second base Arrowood crushed a 3-2 pitch high over the left field wall for his second homer in as many plate appearances. That made it 8-6 Grizzlies. They would add three more in the inning, capped off by a two-run single off the bat of Freddy Lopez.
The 'Hawks answered in the eighth inning. With two outs and the bases loaded Grizzlies reliever Chris Little struck out Mike Bidwell, but the ball got away allowing a run to score. Grizzlies closer Todd Pennington took over. Pennington walked Cody Brooks to force in a run before Joe Anthonsen lined a pitch to right to drive in two more. That made it 11-10. Pennington got the next hitter, Bowen to ground out to end the inning. He then got through the ninth with just a hit to earn the save.
Arrowood was 2-4 with the two homers and six RBIs. Lopez was 1-5 with the pair of RBIs. House was 1-5 with the home run and two runs. Brooks Colvin was 2-5 with a solo home run.
Andy Galle (1-1) earned the win in relief for the Grizzlies. Galle pitched 2 1/3 innings without allowing a base runner. He struck out two en route to his first professional win. Todd Stein started for the Grizzlies and went 4 2/3 innings before being relieved. He allowed six runs, five earned on eight hits.
After taking two of three from the West Division leaders, the Grizzlies now set their sights on East Division-leading Chillicothe. The Paints come to GCS to begin a three-game series Saturday night. Chillicothe has the best record in the Frontier League at 12-3 coming into the series.
