Evansville Otters News Release
Washington, PA- Without two of their premier hitters, the Evansville Otters found themselves in big trouble in the rubber game of their three game series at Washington. Starting pitcher Mike Greenhouse was struggling, and left with the score in favor of the home team 8-2. The Otters would go on to rally and show tremendous resiliency, but not be able to push across that tying run and dropped a tough game to conclude the series by a final of 8-7.
With the loss, Evansville (7-8) heads to River City to take on the Rascals, a team that is currently second in the Western Division standings.
Greenhouse (1-1) took the loss, his first of the season after going just three and a third innings, allowing eight runs (six earned) on five hits while walking a season high four and striking out one. His counterpart Pat Kohorst (3-0) got the win, despite not pitching terribly well himself. Kohorst went five innings, allowing five runs on five hits with three walks and a pair of punch outs.
Washington (6-9) roared out of the gates early, getting two in the first on a bloop single to center with runners at second and third. The ball was momentarily caught by Evansville outfielder Josh Stewart, but fell to the ground upon impact. The Wild Things tacked on a couple more in the second thanks to a pair of singles, an error, a hit batter and a walk.
Leading 4-2 in the fourth, Washington broke the game open with a four run frame. The key blow in the game coming on a bases loaded double by Pat Peavey, his only hit of the game. It would prove to be a big one however, scoring three and making the score 8-2.
Evansville would chip away at the sizeable defecit, scoring three in the fifth on a Beau Blacken two run single and get two more in the seventh thanks to a Jeff Goldbach RBI groundout and a wild pitch.
Down 8-7 in the ninth and down to their final out, Dale Mueller, who earlier had extended his Frontier League best hitting streak to twelve games, singled to keep the game alive. After Mueller stole second, Evansville had life with Frank Scott to the plate and Goldbach on deck. Scott would blast the 0-2 pitch to the left side of the infield, and a fine diving stab made by Pat Peavey would put the exclamation point on what turned out to be an interesting game right down to the final out.
Jim Popp pitched the eighth and ninth innings for the Wild Things for his first save of the season. Donny Langdon meanwhile struck out the side in his inning of work for Evansville in the eighth.
Mueller was the only Otter with a mult-hit night, going 2-5 while Washington's Kyle Werman and Chris Carter also had solid evenings.
Tim Burgess missed his second straight game with a tight quad and Matt Edwards was out of the lineup for the first time this season due to some tightness is his hamstring. Both players are being kept out simply for precautionary reasons and are expected to return to the lineup in River City.
