Utah Grizzlies News Release
CINCINNATI, OH - It took the Grizzlies more than 10 periods of play in the Cincinnati Gardens to score a goal and when they did they tallied twice in a 46 second period but it wasn't enough as the Ducks used a two-goal rally in the third period to continue their stronghold on the Grizzlies winning 4-2. The victory is the seventh in eight games this season for Cincy versus Utah. The Grizzlies finish their four-game home stand with points in three of the four games.
The teams played a very intense first period with good pace up and down the ice. The Ducks scored the game's first goal with the power play as the Grizzlies stopped a 5-on-3 but once Jakub Koreis came out of the box making it a 5-on-4 the Ducks scored with Joffrey Lupul scoring his 27th goal of the year and his sixth in the last three games. Cincinnati outshot the Grizzlies 12-6 as Fredric Cassivi made six saves and David LeNeveu made 11 saves.
The Ducks added to their lead early in the second period when Kurtis Foster wristed a shot by LeNeveu for his 15th goal of the season, the most ever scored by a Ducks defenseman. Zenon Konopka extended his point streak to six games drawing the only assist. Utah finally got on the board in the Gardens ending the scoreless drought this season at 215:10 when Mike Garrow knocked a shot past Cassivi for his third goal in just 10 games with the Grizzlies. Aaron Gavey and Jakub Koreis were credited with the assists pulling Utah to within a goal at 2-1. The Grizzlies would tie the score just 46 seconds later when Erik Westrum snapped a pass across the ice to Joe Callahan who buried a shot by Cassivi for his third goal of the season. Westrum and Dustin Wood were given the helpers at 15:56 of the period. Cincinnati outshot the Grizzlies 16-10 in the period as LeNeveu made 15 saves and Cassivi stopped eight shots.
Cicninnati regained control in the third period scoring at the 3:57 mark when Ryan Shannon, playing in his first professional game, streaked towards the net and redirected a pass by Leneveu for his first professional goal en route to first star honors. Cincinnati added to the lead with a strange goal by Stanislav Chistov who took a shot from a bad angle that ended up in the back of LeNeveu's goalie pants but referee Chris Ciamaga determined that LeNeveu had backed up across the line giving Chistov the unassisted goal at the 13:51 mark. The Ducks outshot the Grizzlies 10-3 in the period.
Fredric Cassivi made 17 saves improving to 21-16-2 and LeNeveu played well making 34 saves in the hard-luck defeat.
The Grizzlies will begin their final home stand of the season on Wednesday when they host the Houston Aeros. Face-off is scheduled for 7:05 PM.
