Grand Rapids Griffins News Release
Grand Rapids, Mich. - A lunchtime start proved to be no picnic for Manitoba on Tuesday afternoon, as the Grand Rapids Griffins devoured the Moose with a dominating 4-0 effort at Van Andel Arena. The Griffins notched three power play goals to post their second straight win and push their unbeaten streak to seven games (5-0-2-0), two shy of the franchise record.
Marc Lamothe earned his first shutout as a Griffin and extended his personal undefeated streak to seven games (4-0-3), but it was a complete team performance that made the difference. Manitoba entered the game averaging an AHL-best 35.94 shots per game, but the Moose were held to just 15 shots while allowing 37 to be returned against Alex Auld.
Sheldon Brookbank's first AHL goal, off a blast from just inside the blueline during a power play, gave the Griffins a 1-0 lead at 10:01 of the opening period.
A delayed penalty to Manitoba gave Grand Rapids the opportunity to stretch its lead late in the middle frame. Hugo Boisvert came off the bench, took a pass from Picard low in the right circle and beat Auld at 18:43.
The Griffins iced the game with a pair of power play markers in the third period. During another delayed penalty, Sean Avery scored from the slot at 4:52, and Tim Skarperud finished off the Moose off by converting a pretty Picard pass from the left side at 12:22.
The 6-3-3-0 Griffins improved to 2-0-1-0 in their last three home games and increased their lead atop the Central Division to four points over Cincinnati. Manitoba, which had won three straight, fell to the .500 mark at 8-8-1-0.
3,400 students from more than 40 elementary, middle and high schools attended today's game as part of "Hockey Recess", visiting concourse displays on American war history and participating in a Sports Marketing 101 seminar presented by Griffins staff members. The total attendance of 7,344 was an increase over the Griffins' first-ever noon start last season, when 6,841 witnessed Grand Rapids' 3-2 win over Chicago on Nov. 13, 2001.
