Griffins Earn 2-2 Tie with Rampage
November 13, 2003 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Grand Rapids Griffins News Release
Grand Rapids, Mich. - Kory Karlander's third period goal, his first in a Grand Rapids uniform since December 1999, enabled the Griffins to rally for a 2-2 tie on Thursday night against the San Antonio Rampage, who entered the night with the second-best record in the American Hockey League.
5:30 into the final frame, Niklas Kronwall took a slapshot from the point that was turned away by goaltender Travis Scott, but Karlander cleaned up the rebound from the left side to give the Griffins (7-4-3-0) an important point in the West Division race. Grand Rapids now stands one point behind the first-place duo of San Antonio (8-3-2-0) and Chicago.
The Griffins' resurgent power play, which connected three times during the third period of Tuesday's 6-2 win over Houston, gave Grand Rapids a lead just 5:22 into the contest. The patient unit took residence in the Rampage zone, passing and looking for the right shot, until Kronwall charged the net and tapped a Michel Picard pass out of the right corner past Scott.
The Rampage drew even during a 5-on-4 at the 18:16 mark, as Mike Green took a feed from Juraj Kolnik and beat Marc Lamothe with a one-timer from the left circle. At 9:28 of the second period, San Antonio used another power play to take a 2-1 advantage, as Lee Goren redirected Michel Periard's blast from the point.
The deadlock, the Griffins' third in their last five home games, gives Grand Rapids a 3-1-3-0 record at Van Andel Arena.
Lamothe was solid between the Griffins' pipes, making 28 saves. Scott, the AHL's leader with eight wins, stopped 38 of Grand Rapids' season-high 40 attempts.
Following an 8 p.m. tilt on Friday in Milwaukee, the Griffins will return to Van Andel Arena on Saturday for a 7:30 p.m. rematch with the Rampage. That game will mark the third for Grand Rapids in as many nights and its fourth in five days.
