Grand Rapids Griffins News Release
Rosemont, Ill. - Joey Crabb, Tim Stapleton and Matt Anderson each recorded two-point outings to pace the Chicago Wolves to a 5-1 win over the Grand Rapids Griffins at Allstate Arena on Sunday.
Crabb (2-0--2), Stapleton (1-1--2) and Anderson (0-2--2) contributed to a three-goal first period for Chicago (26-17-0-2), a deficit in which Grand Rapids (21-24-0-1) has been found for three straight games.
Despite the loss, the Griffins own an all-time record of 45-32-2-3-2 (W-L-T-OTL-SOL) against the red-hot Wolves who have won eight of their last nine games.
Grand Rapids will look to avenge a frustrating 3-13-0-0 stretch on Friday when they host Chicago for a 7:00 p.m. rematch at Van Andel Arena.
Just five seconds after the Griffins killed off an Andy Delmore penalty, Crabb put a rebound inside the left goalpost at 4:11. At the 8:44 mark, Stapleton took a backhand shot on a breakaway, and stuffed his own rebound past Daniel Larsson. Chicago picked up their third goal of the opening frame when Crabb netted Matt Anderson's centering pass at 16:27.
The Griffins battled back just 43 seconds in to the second period, capitalizing on a 5-on-3 advantage for their second power play tally in their last 43 attempts. Doug Janik set up Jeremy Williams at the left circle, from where he unleashed a one-time cannon to put the Griffins on the board.
Chicago restored their three-goal lead with 21 seconds remaining in the middle stanza, when Spencer Machacek picked up a loose puck behind the Griffins net and jammed a wraparound inside the left goalpost.
In the third period, Jason Krog solidified a 5-1 score by chipping in a Brett Sterling pass at the 8:06 mark.
Larsson stopped 23 shots in net for Grand Rapids, and Peter Mannino made 26 saves in the Wolves' victory.
Three Stars: 1. CHI Crabb (2 goals); 2. CHI Anderson (2 assists); 3. CHI Mannino (26 saves).
