Grieb named Offensive Player of the Week

SAN JOSE, Calif. (May 4, 2004) - San Jose quarterback Mark Grieb was today named the Arena Football League's Baby Ruth Real Deal Offensive Player of the Week for his performance in the SaberCats win over New Orleans on May 1.

Grieb (6-3, 208, UC Davis), who is in his seventh AFL season, earned the honor by leading the AFLWA No. 1 ranked SaberCats (10-2) to a 68-34 victory over the No. 2-ranked VooDoo (9-3) on Saturday.

The 2002 Offensive Player of the Year completed 23-of-29 passes (79.3 percent) for 290 yards with five touchdowns and added a rushing score. Grieb had a perfect second half completing all 10 of his passes for 155 yards and three scores as the SaberCats pulled away with a 40-7 scoring outburst over the final two quarters.

The award is the second AFL weekly honor this season for Grieb and the third in his career. The former Aggie was tabbed Co-Offensive Player of the Week in Week 6.

New York Dragons defensive specialist Corey Johnson was named ADT Defensive Player of the Week and Columbus Destroyers receiver/defensive back Sedrick Robinson earned U.S. Army Ironman of the Week honors.

The SaberCats return to action on Sunday, May 9, when they travel to Arizona for a confrontation with the Rattlers. The game will be regionally televised by NBC beginning at Noon (PT). San Jose returns to the HP Pavilion at San Jose on Saturday, May 22, when they entertain Jon Bon Jovi's Philadelphia Soul.
