COBRAS LAST WEEK: The Carolina Cobras fell victim to the Columbus Destroyers and the all-around talents of Sedrick Robinson, dropping a 60-52 decision Saturday night at the Charlotte Coliseum. The Cobras were unable to overcome a 24-7 deficit early in the second quarter as Robinson tallied 272 all-purpose yards and accounted for four touchdowns in leading the Destroyers to a tough Eastern Division victory. Carolina trimmed the Columbus advantage to 53-47 early in the fourth quarter, but quarterback Ryan Vena subsequently led the Destroyers on a seven-minute, nine-play drive that was capped off by a five-yard scoring pass to lineman Tyronn Johnson. Columbus' Del Lee intercepted a Rickey Foggie pass attempt in the end zone on the ensuing drive to seal the victory for the visitors. Carolina squandered a strong performance by Foggie, who completed 22-of-30 passes for 232 yards and six touchdowns on the night, while also adding a one-yard scoring run. Damien Groce led all Cobras receivers with five catches for 67 yards and two scores, while Bernard Holmes chipped in two touchdown receptions.

DRAGONS LAST WEEK: The Dragons continued its recent torrid pace, securing the Eastern Division lead with a dominating 44-20 victory over the Dallas Desperados on Saturday night at the American Airlines Center. Corey Johnson set a franchise record with three interceptions as New York tallied eight defensive stops on the night. The Dragons offensive effort was led by Aaron Garcia, who completed 20-of-36 passes for 273 yards and five touchdowns. Will Holder led all New York receivers with six catches for 106 yards and a score, while Richmond Flowers added five receptions for 99 yards and two touchdowns.

COBRAS NEXT WEEK: Carolina hits the road once again to face the expansion Philadelphia Soul on Saturday, May 18. The Cobras narrowly defeated the Soul, 63-59, on April 17 at the Charlotte Coliseum when the Carolina defense stuffed a goal line rush attempt by Philadelphia's Ricky Ross as time expired.

HEAD COACHES: Ron Selesky (6-12) makes his return to the Cobras sidelines this season after spending the 2004 season as head coach and director of football operations for the Buffalo Destroyers. He previously was a member of Carolina's original coaching staff in 2000 as an assistant coach and director of player personnel. Prior to joining the Destroyers, Selesky earned af2 Coach of the Year honors in 2002, guiding the Albany Conquest to a regular season mark of 13-3 and a Northeast Division title. Selesky also spent the 2001 season on the sidelines for the af2 Louisville Fire, leading the team to a 6-10 mark. He also serves as the director of player personnel and assistant coach for the Tampa Bay Storm from 1997 to 1999. With the Storm, his teams compiled a 31-11 regular season record and earned a berth in the 1998 ArenaBowl.

Todd Shell (44-34) took the reigns for New York five games into the 2003 season, leading the Dragons to an 8-4 record and the Eastern Division title. For his efforts, Shell was named as the league's Coach of the Year. Prior to joining New York, he served as the first head coach in the history of the San Jose franchise. He led the SaberCats to an 8-4 record and a Western Division championship in his first season in 1995. In four seasons, Shell posted a 29-25 mark and three playoff berths.

COBRAS-DRAGONS LAST MEETING:

New York 57, Carolina 41 (4/4/04) Charlotte Coliseum

The New York Dragons secured an important Eastern Division victory as they defeated the Carolina Cobras 57-41 in front of 7,391 at the Charlotte Coliseum. The Cobras held the Dragons to 129 yards of total offense, but were unable to withstand a strong second-half push by New York. Carolina outgained the Dragons 237-129 in the contest, but was undone by a New York offense that scored on all but one possession.

FAMILIAR FACES: The Cobras roster features six former New York Dragons: OS Todd Doxzon, WR/DB Damien Groce, QB Matt Nagy, OL/DL Robert Stewart, OL/DL Cory Stone and OL/DL Sean...Nagy was acquired by Carolina during the offseason in exchange for New York OL/DL Tim McGill, who was named as the Cobras Most Improved Player following the 2003 campaign...Sharp spent the 2000 and 2001 seasons in Carolina.

PLAYERS TO WATCH:
QB Rickey Foggie: The seven-year AFL veteran has posted impressive numbers in his first two starts of the season. Named as the Co-Offensive Player of the Game in the Cobras win over Philadelphia in his first start, he completed 22-of-31 passes for a season-high 338 yards and five touchdowns. He followed that up with a 22-of-30 passing performance against the Destroyers, throwing for 232 yards and six touchdowns. Foggie currently ranks among the AFL's all-time leaders in all major passing categories.

OS Damien Groce: Groce has emerged as a dangerous weapon as a receiver, rusher and kick returner this season. In 12 games, he has 60 catches for 730 yards and a single-season record 19 touchdowns, including the game-winning score in the Cobras come-from-behind win at Columbus (2/13). Groce had a career performance in his first start at offensive specialist against Philadelphia, setting career highs with eight receptions for 173 yards and three touchdowns. He currently ranks tenth in the AFL with 1,551 all-purpose yards and has set Carolina single-season records for touchdowns (21) and points scored (126)

WR/DB Jarrick Hillery: The fifth-year veteran is one of the most versatile two-way players in the AFL. This season, he has made contributions on offense, defense and special teams in 2004, earning AFL Ironman of the Week honors following the Cobras victory over the Tampa Bay Storm (3/21). Thus far, he ranks among the team leaders with 23 receptions (5th), 238 receiving yards (5th), 18.9 kickoff return average (1st) and 26.5 tackles (1st).

DS Daryon Brutley: The former Northern Iowa standout has become the leader of the Cobras defensive backfield following the injury to DS Glenn Davis and the release of DS Damon Mason. Named as the ADT Defensive Player of the Game in Carolina's victory over Philadelphia (4/17), Brutley has totaled 10.5 tackles over the last two contest and currently ranks third on the team with 22.5 tackles in just eight games of action.

SOUL PLAYERS TO WATCH:
QB Aaron Garcia: The nine-year veteran enters the 2004 season as one of the most prolific passers in league history. He ranks first all-time with 614 scoring passes, second with 29,571 passing yards and third with 2,306 career completions. This season, he has continued his torrid pace, ranking among the league leaders with 70 touchdown passes (T-2nd), while completing 220-of-355 passes for 2,791 yards and nine interceptions.

WR/DB Will Holder: The second-year pro has emerged as on the most dangerous weapons in Garcia's arsenal of receivers. Honored as the AFL's Ironman of the Week in the first week of the 2004 season, Holder currently leads the team with 54 catches for 804 yards and 22 touchdowns. A defensive force as well, he has added 18.0 tackles and two interceptions.

DS Donvetis Franklin: The defensive specialist out of Michigan State is the leader of the Dragons backfield after posting back-to-back 90-plus tackle seasons to begin his career. This season, he leads the club, and ranks third in the AFL, with 68.5 takedowns as well as 16 passes defended.

SNAKE BITES:
Ewww...Groce: Cobras OS Damien Groce has emerged as a dangerous playmaker, proving to be a force on offense and special teams. En route to setting career highs for receptions (60) receiving yards (730), Groce has also set team records for receiving touchdowns (19), touchdowns (21) and points scored (126). He had a standout performance in his first start at OS in win over Philadelphia on April 17 (8 rec., 173 yards, 3 TDs). The former New York Dragon also leads the team with 42 KO returns and 769 KO return yards and ranks 10th in the AFL with 1,551 all-purpose yards.

On the Sidelines: Ron Selesky was promoted to the interim head coach position two weeks ago, becoming the sixth head coach in Carolina history. It marked the fourth mid-season coaching change in five seasons.

Dragons Fly South: The Cobras roster features six former New York Dragons, including OS Todd Doxzon, OS Damien Groce, QB Matt Nagy, OL/DL Sean Tremblay and OL/DL Cory Stone. OL/DL Robert Stewart also appeared in 28 games with the Dragons in 2001 and 2002.

Oh What a Night: These two teams have only faced off four times in their history, but one game found its place in AFL history. On July 7, 2001, the Cobras traveled to face the Dragons aerial attack led by QB Aaron Garcia. New York would go on to score an AFL-record 99 points en route to a 99-68 victory. Garcia threw for 378 yards and an astounding 11 touchdown passes, including seven to Kevin Swayne, who pulled in 11 catches for 171 yards on the night.

Back in the Spotlight: Veteran quarterback Rickey Foggie has made a successful return under center after missing the 2003 season and being relegated to back-up duties for the first 10 games of the 2004 campaign. In his first start of the season, he led the Cobras to a victory over the Philadelphia Soul, completing 22-of-31 passes for a season-high 338 yards and five touchdowns to earn Co-Offensive Player of the Game honors. Foggie followed that performance by passing for a season-high six scoring tosses in the loss to Columbus.

In the Zone: The Cobras have been very efficient in the red-zone throughout the 2004 season, leading the league with a 95.7 percent conversion percentage. In 46 trips inside their opponents' 10-yard line, Carolina has scored 40 touchdowns and four field goals. The Cobras have been successful in 36 out of the club's last 37 red zone possessions.
Young Bucks: The Cobras defense has been aided by the development of several young linemen who saw limited action throughout the season's opening weeks. OL/DL Troy Pelshak has recorded eight tackles and two sacks in his last four contests, while OL/DL Bryan Ray recorded a sack and forced fumble in the loss to Columbus and has posted 8.5 tackles this season. Both players provide the pass rush necessary to disrupt opponent's passing attacks and as they continue to develop, as will the Cobras defense.

Early Bird Gets the Worm: The first team to score this weekend is likely to hold a large advantage based on the Cobras' history. This season, Carolina is 4-2 when they get on the board first, but winless in six contests when the opponents notch the first points. A similar trend can be found throughout team history – (12-17 when scoring first; 8-33 when opponent scores first).

Nifty Fifty: The first team to 50 points very well could be the victor in this weekend's matchup. Throughout their five-year history, the Cobras have had very little success when they are unable to post 50 points or more. At the same time, they have been most successful when holding opponents under the half-century mark.

Scoring output 2004 Win Pct. All-time Win Pct.
Less than 50 pts 0-5 .000 3-38 .073
50 pts or more 4-3 .571 17-12 .586

Stepping Up: First-year WR/LB D.J. Humphries has capitalized on his first extended playing time of the 2004 season. One week after reeling in eight passes for 90 yards and his first career touchdown reception against the Philadelphia Soul, Humphries notched a team-high 6.5 tackles in the team's loss to Columbus. After only three career games, the South Carolina native has displayed skills that will be expected to be a big part of the Cobras attack following the loss of WR/LB Sir Mawn Wilson and the departure of WR/LB Jack Walker Jr.

Return to Sender: Kickoff coverage continues to be a thorn in the side for the Cobras. Prior to the contest with Columbus, Carolina had surrendered kickoff returns for touchdowns in three consecutive games, bringing their season total to six. Overall, the Cobras special teams have allowed a league-worst 22.5 yards per kickoff return, well beyond the current team record of 20.6 yards per return in 2002.

Running on Empty: Carolina continues to struggle to put together a forceful running attack, standing last in the AFL with 9.9 rushing yards per game. After posting 30 yards on seven carries (4.3 yds/carry) in the season opening victory over the Dallas Desperados, the Cobras have proceeded to record just 89 yards on 54 carries (1.6 yds/carry) over the next 11 games. FB/LB Travis Reece currently leads the team with 33 rush attempts for 78 yards and seven touchdowns.

Defense: The Cobras recent struggles can be mainly attributed to their inability to limit opponents passing attacks. In dropping three of the last four games, the Cobras have surrendered nearly 14 yards per completion (63-of-105 for 869 yards), including 19 touchdown passes and no interceptions. Overall, Carolina has surrendered 60.3 points per game during the four-game stretch.

Pace Setters: While OS Damien Groce has already made his mark in the Cobras record books with 21 touchdowns and 126 points scored in 2004, a number of players are on pace to set a variety of single-season records if they continue on their current pace. Following is a chart of where each player currently stands, the record and the record-holder.

Queen-Sized Win: Carolina put an end to a grueling, AFL-record 16-game home losing streak on March 21 with a 54-43 victory over the defending ArenaBowl champions, the Tampa Bay Storm. The Cobras special teams accounted for three touchdowns, while the defense pressured the Storm throughout the game, posting two interceptions and nine passes defended.

Nothing But Iron-man: WR/DB Jarrick Hillery was recognized as the Army Ironman of the Week for his performance against Tampa Bay on Sunday, March 21. The four-year veteran recorded two kickoff returns for touchdowns, caught three passes for 39 yards and a score and added four solo tackles and an interception on defense.

Change Is Good: The Cobras changes on the sidelines have resulted in a very unique stat. With the team's victory over Philadelphia on April 17, Carolina interim head coach Ron Selesky became the third coach to win his first game with the team in 2004, joining former head coaches Eddie Khayat and John Gregory. The club is 1-8 in the other nine games this season.

Chance To Shine: After losing Glenn Davis to injury and releasing Damon Mason, Carolina has turned to a number of new faces in the defensive backfield. First-year DS Daryon Brutley was named the ADT Defensive Player of the Game in the Cobras win over Philadelphia (4/17) after recording a team-high five tackles, while WR/DB Ernest Ross has seen extensive playing time as well, posting 10.0 tackles in the last three games. Second-year DS Henry Baker looks for his first action of the season while newly-signed DS Fred Vinson, who was a second-round draft choice of the Green Bay Packers in the 1999 NFL Draft saw his first playing time in loss to Columbus.

The Making of the Cobras: The Cobras have experienced a dramatic makeover following the disappointments of the 2003 season. Only two players from last year's squad will be on the field in the tenth week, OL/DL Robert Stewart and 2003 Team MVP WR/DB Bernard Holmes. Of the 21 remaining players on the active roster, 20 were signed as free agents.

He Roxz: OS Todd Doxzon has been the Cobras most consistent receiver throughout the 2004 campaign and is on pace to shatter many of the franchise's single-season receiving records. Thus far, he is seventh in the league with 87 receptions and tenth with 996 yards. Currently, he is two receptions shy of the single-season franchise records. Following is how he would stack up with the top pass catchers in Carolina's five-year history if he continues on his current pace.
