COBRAS LAST WEEK: ADT Defensive Player of the Game Fred Vinson broke up an Anthony Buich pass attempt in the end zone with just four seconds remaining to give the Carolina Cobras a narrow 36-31 victory over the Grand Rapids Rampage. With Carolina holding a slim, 27-25 advantage heading into the final frame, the two teams traded touchdowns to leave the game at 33-31 with just under a minute remaining in the contest. Carolina then capped off a five-play, 42-yard drive with a 23-yard field goal from Rob Bironas to extend their lead to 36-31 with only 48 seconds on the clock. Three consecutive pass completions from Buich left the home team on the Cobras 13-yard line with time running out, but the Carolina defense forced three incomplete passes on the games final four plays, including Vinson's diving stop, to seal the win.

FORCE LAST WEEK: The Georgia Force won in convincing fashion as they handed the Austin Wranglers a 51-34 defeat. In only their second home win of the season, the Force used five touchdown passes and a rushing score by Leon Murray to postpone the Wranglers postseason bid. For the game, Murray threw for 216 yards on 15-of-26 passing and added 15 yards rushing on four carries. Offensive specialist Markeith Cooper hauled in two touchdowns and racked up 40 yards receiving on four catches. With his efforts, Cooper etched his name in the Force record book setting a new single season high with 22 touchdowns. Cooper also became the first 1,000+-yard receiver in team history amassing 1,027 receiving yards on the year. Defensively, Kevin Gaines established a new club single game mark with 6 pass break-ups.

He previously was a member of Carolina's original coaching staff in 2000 as an assistant coach and director of player personnel. Prior to joining the Destroyers, Selesky earned af2 Coach of the Year honors in 2002, guiding the Albany Conquest to a regular season mark of 13-3 and a Northeast Division title. Selesky also spent the 2001 season on the sidelines for the af2 Louisville Fire, leading the team to a 6-10 mark. With the Storm, his teams compiled a 31-11 regular season record and earned a berth in the 1998 ArenaBowl.

Named Interim Head Coach on April 19th, Bob Kronenberg (2-2) takes over the position after Marty Lowe was relieved of his duties. Currently in his fourth season in the AFL coaching ranks, Kronenberg has the longest tenure with the Force coaching staff serving as the Assistant Head Coach for the last three seasons. PLAYERS TO WATCH:
QB Rickey Foggie: The seven-year AFL veteran has been quite impressive since taking over the starting job five weeks ago. Foggie has received Offensive Player of the Game honors on three occasions as he has passed for 1,429 yards and 22 touchdowns on 121-of-188 passing. In his first start of the season on April 17, he completed 22-of-31 passes for a season-high 338 yards and five touchdowns in a win over Philadelphia. Foggie currently ranks among the AFL's all-time leaders in all major passing categories.

OS Damien Groce: Groce has emerged as a dangerous weapon as a receiver, rusher and kick returner this season. In 13 games, he has 68 catches for 822 yards and a single-season record tying 19 touchdowns, including the game-winning score in the Cobras come-from-behind win at Columbus (2/13). Groce had a career performance in his first start at offensive specialist against Philadelphia, setting career highs with eight receptions for 173 yards and three touchdowns. He currently ranks 9th in the AFL with 1,735 all-purpose yards and has set Carolina single-season records for touchdowns (21) and points scored (126)

WR/DB Jarrick Hillery: The fifth-year veteran is one of the most versatile two-way players in the AFL. He has made contributions on offense, defense and special teams in 2004, earning AFL Ironman of the Week honors following the Cobras victory over the Tampa Bay Storm (3/21). Thus far, he ranks among the team leaders with 31 receptions (4th), 335 receiving yards (4th), 19.1 kickoff return average (1st) and 36.5 tackles (1st).

WR/LB D.J. Humphries: The first-year player out of Presbyterian College has made an immediate impact after seeing his playing time increase over the last five weeks. Thus far, he has notched 33 catches for 320 yards and six touchdowns, while adding 13.5 tackles and an interception on defense. His lanky frame has proven to be an asset at receiver and ‘jack' linebacker as he has garnered Ironman of the Game honors in each of the Cobras last two games.

FORCE PLAYERS TO WATCH:
QB Leon Murray: The second-year veteran out of Tennessee State has developed into one of the most explosive all-around playcallers in the AFL. This season, he has passed for 3,406 yards and 55 touchdowns, while adding 191 yards and 13 scores on the ground. Last season, Murray was named the league's Rookie of the Year and set Georgia single-game records for passing yards (354) and touchdowns (8).

OS Markeith Cooper: Listed at 5'6'', Cooper is the shortest player in the AFL. This season, he has become the leading offensive threat for the Force, pulling in 78 catches for 1,027 yards and 22 touchdowns. The third-year offensive specialist also serves Georgia's main kickoff return option, racking up 1,054 yards and two touchdowns on 54 returns in 2004. His 2,108 all-purpose yards ranks fifth in the AFL.

DS Kevin Gaines: One of the most prolific defenders in AFL history, Gaines currently ranks 11th in the AFL with 71.5 tackles in 2004. The seven-year veteran also leads the team with three interceptions and 13 passes defended. Last season, Gaines was named the Force's Co-Defensive Player of the Year after leading the squad in tackles, interceptions and passes defended.

New Guys in Town: The matchup between Carolina and Georgia will feature the second consecutive meeting of interim head coaches. The Cobras' Ron Selesky has earned a 3-2 mark since taking over for John Gregory following week 10 of the season. Gregory had earlier replaced Eddie Khayat, who was dismissed after six weeks of play. For Georgia, Bob Kronenberg took the reigns following the dismissal of Marty Lowe on April 19 after the Force began the season 4-7. Both coaches have seen positive results, as Georgia has gone 2-2 under the leadership of Kronenberg, including an impressive 51-34 win over Austin last weekend.

Back in the Spotlight: Veteran quarterback Rickey Foggie has made a successful return under center after missing the 2003 season and being relegated to back-up duties for the first 10 games of the 2004 campaign. In just five starts this season, Foggie has completed 121-of-188 passes for 1,429 yards and 22 touchdowns. In that time, he has garnered Offensive Player of the Game honors on three occasions. In his first start of the season, he led the Cobras to a victory over the Philadelphia Soul (4/17), completing 22-of-31 passes for a season-high 338 yards and five touchdowns.

Seventh Heaven: With the teams recent two-game winning streak, the Cobras are within one victory of tying the franchise record for wins in a season. Carolina notched a 7-7 record in 2001, before falling in the first round of the AFL postseason. With a win over Georgia, the Cobras would equal the second-biggest single-season turnaround in league history. If Carolina secures a 7-9 mark, it would be a seven-game improvement over the 0-16 disappointments of 2003.

Close Shave: For the second consecutive week, the Cobras were able to earn a victory in the final moments of the game. Carolina has shown a knack for winning close contests in 2004, with four of the club's six victories coming by a margin of seven points or fewer. Overall, the team holds a 4-2 mark in games decided by seven points or less, including a 3-1 record in games decided by three points or fewer.

Early Bird Gets the Worm: Carolina continues to display the importance of scoring first in the AFL. Throughout the season, Carolina has thrived when notching the first points of the game, holding a 5-2 record. On the other hand, the team has struggled mightily when their opponents are first on the scoreboard. This season, Carolina just 1-7 when the opponents notch the first points. A similar trend can be found throughout team history – (13-17 when scoring first; 9-34 when opponent scores first).

In the Zone: The Cobras have been very efficient in the red-zone throughout the 2004 season, ranking second in the league with a 89.6 percent conversion percentage. In 67 trips inside their opponents' 10-yard line, Carolina has scored 52 touchdowns and eight field goals. Their efforts are topped only by the Chicago Rush, who have converted 72-of-79 red zone attempts (91.1 percent)

Nifty Fifty: The first team to 50 points very well could be the victor in this weekend's matchup. Throughout their five-year history, the Cobras have had very little success when they are unable to post 50 points or more. At the same time, they have been most successful when holding opponents under the half-century mark.
Scoring output 2004 Win Pct. All-time Win Pct.
Less than 50 pts 2-6 .250 5-39 .114
50 pts or more 4-3 .571 17-12 .586
Allow less than 50 pts 4-2 .667 16-14 .533
Allow 50 pts or more 2-7 .222 6-37 .140

Stepping Up: First-year WR/LB D.J. Humphries continues to thrive in his first extended playing time of the season. After spending the first 10 weeks of the season on the Cobras practice squad, Humphries has posted 33 catches for 320 yards and six touchdowns to go along with 13.5 tackles on defense. He was honored as the U.S. Army Ironman of the Game in each of the last two contests.

Defensive Makeover: Defensive specialists Henry Baker and Fred Vinson have drastically improved the Cobras defensive backfield since they took over two weeks ago. Vinson earned ADT Defensive Player of the Game honors after recording 11.0 tackles and the game-saving pass break-up in the win over Grand Rapids. A week earlier, Baker recorded a team-high 5.0 tackles, despite being knocked out of the game early with a neck injury. The Cobras defense has stood tall in the two games, holding their opponents to 37.0 points per game. In comparison, Carolina allowed over 60 points per game in the previous five contests.

On the Sidelines: Ron Selesky was promoted to the interim head coach position five weeks ago, becoming the sixth head coach in Carolina history. It marked the fourth mid-season coaching change in five seasons. With the win over Grand Rapids, Selesky becomes the only head coach in Cobras history with a record over .500.
Head Coach Season Record Win Pct.
Doug Kay 2000-01 10-18 .357
Mike Neu 2001-02 6-8 .429
Mike Hold 2003 0-13 .000
Eddie Khayat 2003-04 2-7 .286
John Gregory 2004 1-3 .250
Ron Selesky 2004 3-2 .600

Getting Things Rolling: Carolina have racked up 39 rushing yards in the team's current two-game winning streak after posting a dismal 8.0 yards per game over the previous 12 contests. The recent success on the ground pulled the Cobras rushing offense out of the AFL cellar for the first time since the season opening victory over the Dallas Desperados, when the Cobras posted a season-high 30 yards on seven carries (4.3 yds/carry). FB/LB Travis Reece currently leads the team with 41 rush attempts for 85 yards and eight touchdowns.

Heading In the Right Direction: Regardless of the recent struggles, this year's Cobras have seen a vast improvement over last season's squad in a number of key areas.
2004 2003
Scoring offense 46.8 34.6
Pass offense 246.7 204.8
TDs thrown 69 58
INT thrown 10 26

Ewww...Groce: Cobras OS Damien Groce has emerged as a dangerous playmaker, proving to be a force on offense and special teams. En route to setting career highs for receptions (68), receiving yards (822), and receiving touchdowns (19), Groce has also set team records touchdowns (21) and points scored (126). He had a standout performance in his first start at OS in win over Philadelphia on April 17 (8 rec., 173 yards, 3 TDs). The former New York Dragon also leads the team with 47 KO returns and 861 KO return yards and ranks 9th in the AFL with 1,735 all-purpose yards.

The Making of the Cobras: The Cobras have experienced a dramatic makeover following the disappointments of the 2003 season. Only two players from last year's squad will be on the field in the 15th week, OL/DL Robert Stewart and 2003 Team MVP WR/DB Bernard Holmes. Of the 21 remaining players on the active roster, 20 were signed as free agents.
