Cobras Kicker Rob Bironas Joins Pittsburgh Steelers

CHARLOTTE – The Carolina Cobras of the Arena Football League announced that kicker Rob Bironas has signed a one-year contract with the Pittsburgh Steelers of the National Football League.

Bironas (6-0, 200, Georgia Southern) appeared in all 16 games for the Cobras in his first AFL season, ranking third on the team with 121 points scored. The 26-year-old kicker established single-season franchise records for field goals made (17), point after touchdown (PAT) made (70) and PAT attempts (89).

It is the third NFL stint for Bironas, who originally signed as an undrafted free agent with the Green Bay Packers following the 2002 NFL Draft. The kicker also saw action in two preseason games for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers prior to the 2003 NFL campaign.

Prior to joining the Cobras this season, Bironas played in 12 games for the Charleston Swamp Foxes of arenafootball2 in 2003. He set career, season and team records by connecting on 12 of 27 field goal attempts during the season, while finishing among team leaders in scoring with 94 points.

Bironas' stellar collegiate career began at Auburn University (1996-1999) where he was recognized as a semi-finalist for the Lou Groza Award following his sophomore season. He completed his college experience at Georgia Southern in 2000, connecting on 7 of 13 field goal attempts in helping the Eagles to the NCAA Division I-AA national championship.
