May 4, 2004 - Arena Football League (1987-2008) (AFL I)
Orlando Predators News Release
ORLANDO (6-6) at NEW ORLEANS (9-3)
Date: Sunday, May 9, 2004
Toe-to-Leather Time: 3 p.m.
Site: New Orleans Arena (15,500)
Officials: Referee: Perry Havener; Umpire: Tom Laverty;
Head Linesman: Kelly Saalfeld; Line Judge: David Meslow
Back Judge: Dino Paganelli
Radio: WQTM 740 The Team (Tom Morgan and Dan Pearson)
TV: NBC (Allen Bestwick, Mike Pawlawski, Rich Lenz)
Streaks: Both teams are riding one-game losing streaks
Series Record: Orlando leads 1-0
Coaches: Orlando: Jay Gruden (7th season, 49-29, .628); New Orleans: Mike Neu (3rd Season, 16-13, .552)
THE STAKES: At 9-3, New Orleans is closing in on clinching a playoff berth in its first AFL season. On paper, the game is a lot more important to the Predators -- who saw their three-game winning streak go down in flames last week against the Tampa Bay Storm.
Orlando, now 6-6, will probably need to win three of their last four games to have any chance of earning a playoff berth. It will not be an easy road for the Predators, who play three of their last four games on the road and will face teams that are a collective 12 games over .500 (New Orleans 9-3, Austin 7-5, New York 7-5 and Los Angeles 7-5). All four are in front of Orlando in the playoff picture.
Although New Orleans is in a much better playoff position than Orlando and a loss would not hurt as much, Mike Neu and his team will be out for revenge after Orlando manhandled his team one month ago in the TD Waterhouse Centre, 57-24. Including that game, New Orleans has gone 2-2 after a 7-1 start. Another loss to the Predators is not something New Orleans needs â especially with tough games remaining against Tampa Bay and Austin.
"It pretty much comes down to this...a win and we're still in the picture...a loss and it all but kills our chances of making the playoffs," Predators Head Coach Jay Gruden says. "We need to approach the New Orleans game as a playoff contest. Win we move on, lose it's probably over."

QUOTE/UNQUOTE
"It was a tough deal. We fought back and had the ball with a chance to win the game in the final minute and didn't execute. The better team on that day won the game, but it's still frustrating to know we had a chance and didn't do the things we needed to do to win."
-- Jay Gruden after team overcame a 23-point deficit but still lost.
THE COACHES
PREDS HEAD COACH JAY GRUDEN
After spending the last two seasons as the Orlando's quarterback, JAY GRUDEN returned to the bench as the team's head coach in 2004. After a Hall of Fame career as a quarterback for the Tampa Bay Storm, Gruden began his coaching career in 1997 by serving as offensive assistant for the Nashville Kats. One season later, the Predators made him the youngest head coach in the AFL. Gruden would go on to lead the Predators to three consecutive appearances in the ArenaBowl and a pair of championships. After guiding the Predators to a fourth consecutive trip to the playoffs in 2001, Gruden shocked the AFL world by announcing his intentions to resign in order to return to the playing field after a five-year layoff. In two seasons as Predators quarterback, Gruden directed the Predators to back-to-back appearances in the semifinals, falling one game short of his goal each season. In 2003, he recorded a 10-0 record with 49 touchdown passes and two interceptions as a starting quarterback during the regular season. Off-season surgery, combined with the tragic loss of former Head Coach Fran Papasedero in a June 19, 2003 traffic accident, resulted in Gruden returning to the sideline. Gruden will take a 49-29 (.628) all-time coaching record into the New Orleans game. He is 41-27 in regular season games (.603) and 8-2 as a head coach in playoff games (.800).

New Orleans Head Coach Mike Neu
Former Predators quarterback Mike Neu is in his first season with the New Orleans VooDoo and his third as an Arena Football Head Coach. Neu began his coaching career with the Nashville Kats in 1998, where he was quarterbacks coach and was promoted to offensive coordinator in 1999. He became head coach of the Augusta Stallions of the "af2" league in 2000, where he guided that team to an outstanding 14-4 record in his first season. He then joined the Carolina Cobras in 2001 as offensive coordinator, where he was promoted to Head Coach for the final game of the season. With Carolina that season, he helped guide the Cobras to a 7-7 record (a marked improvement from the team's 3-14 record a year before) and headed an offense that finished seventh in the league in scoring at more than 56 points per game. He was named permanent head coach in the off-season and paced the Cobras to a 7-9 record, and a first-ever playoff win. He was named the first Head Coach of the expansion New Orleans VooDoo on June 17, 2003. Neu, considered one of the top young coaches in the AFL, will bring a 16-13 record as an AFL head coach into this Sunday's game. Neu's professional playing career includes stops with the Calgary Stampeders (CFL) in 1995, Orlando Predators in 1996 and Nashville Kats in 1997. With the Predators, he played in two games, completing 3 of 4 passes for 22 yards and one touchdown. He played four seasons at Ball State, where he was MAC Most Valuable Player and Offensive Player of the Year in 1993
FUN FACT: New Orleans expansion roster includes former Predators players Jermaine Alfred, BJ Cohen, Brian Schmitz, and Lamont Moore.
GRUDEN SEARCHES FOR 50: Should Orlando win on Sunday, Jay Gruden would become the 9th coach in Arena Football League history to reach 50 coaching wins. The all-time win list for AFL Head coaches:

2. Danny White 135*

SERIES HISTORY AND NOTES: A 2004 expansion team, there's not much here in history as the teams have met just once, back in Orlando one month ago...the Predators jumped out to a 27-3 lead at halftime and cruised to a 33-point win over the VooDoo...at the time, it was the worst loss in New Orleans history, but that was eclipsed last weekend when San Jose dropped a 34-point loss on the New Orleans...Joe Hamilton threw for four touchdowns in that game (complete game summary available in this notes packet).

McENTYRE KEEPS ON KEEPING ON
With his seventh interception of the season on Sunday, Orlando Predators defensive specialist Kenny "The Glove" McEntyre added to his legacy by increasing his AFL record total to 53 picks. McEntyre has been nothing short of amazing in his career. Counting playoffs, he has now played in exactly 100 Arena Football League games and has had 63 career interceptions (53 regular season, 10 post season), giving him an incredible ratio of .63 interceptions for every game he has played in.

PREDATORS HIT SELLOUT
After reducing capacity to 13,692 at the TD Waterhouse for the 2004 season (parts of several limited vision sections were eliminated and covered for), the Orlando Predators claimed their first sellout of the 2004 season as 13,714 tickets were distributed for the game with Tampa Bay. The last available ticket was sold at 3:14 p.m., giving the Predators their first sellout since the 2000 ArenaBowl and their 29th sellout in franchise history.
McENTYRE IS TRUE IRONMAN
Kenny "The Glove" McEntyre has been one of the toughest competitors to ever wear a Predators uniform. Despite numerous injuries in his career, McEntyre has yet to miss a start since coming to the Predators in the tail end of the 1998 season. Counting the game against Tampa Bay
last week, McEntyre has now answered the bell for100 consecutive games -- a team record.
FLEMING KEEPS STRING ALIVE
With 12 receptions for 131 yards and three touchdowns against Tampa Bay, WR/LB Cory Fleming has now caught at least one touchdown pass in 21 consecutive games with the Predators. Fleming has also scored at least one touchdown in 27 of 29 career games with Orlando (streaks include playoff games).
NEEDS
WR/LB Cory Fleming Needs:
--31 receptions to reach 700 for his career
--Needs 12 TD receptions to reach 200 for career
--Needs 266 receiving yards to set new Predators
Single season record (1,527 Barry
Wagner, 1997)
QB Joe Hamilton Needs:
--Needs seven TD passes to reach 50 for season
--Needs 18 TD passes to establish Predators rookie
Record (Craig Whelihan, 60, 2001)
OL/DL Jermaine Smith Needs:
--Three QB sacks to set new Predators single
Season record (EJ Burt 9.5, 2003)
DS Kenny McEntyre Needs:
--23 Tackles to break Orlando's all-time career
Record (Barry Wagner, 398.5, 1992-99)
--2 Pass Defenses to Reach 100 for career
OS Travis McGriff Needs:
--91 all-purpose yards to hit 1,000 for 2004
BUT IS IT A RECORD?
Kicker Jay Taylor's 36-yard field goal miss (wide left) against the Storm broke a string of 10 consecutive field goals made by the West Virginia rookie. Although no official record is on the books, a quick check of the AFL archives shows that Taylor may have tied New York Knights kicker Mike Black, who made 10 consecutive field goals during the 1998 season, including a 6 for 6 performance against Portland that season. AFL officials will pour over the record books in the off-season to determine if 10 consecutive field goals made are indeed the AFL record.
TAYLOR KEEPS PAT STRING ALIVE
Although he missed his only FG attempt against the Storm, Taylor was a perfect 6 for 6 in extra points and has now booted 19 consecutive extra points. The Predators record is 34, set by Charlie Baumann over two seasons (1996-97). Counting field goals, Taylor has made 29 of his last 30 combined attempts.
MCGRIFF'S HUGE GAME
Against Tampa Bay last Sunday, Travis McGriff had one of the best offensive outings in Orlando Predators history. McGriff averaged a healthy 18.7 yards on eight kickoff returns, including a 55-yard return for touchdown. Add in 163 yards on 10 receptions (16.3 average) and three more scores and McGriff totaled 313 all-purpose yards. McGriff's 313 all-purpose yards was the second highest total in Orlando Predators history. The top all-purpose yards include:
1. Barry Wagner 435 vs. Iowa, 1966
2. Travis McGriff 313 vs. Tampa Bay, 2004
3. Barry Wagner 312 vs. Albany, 1998
4. Barry Wagner 307 vs. Anaheim, 1966
Siaha Burley 307 vs. Tampa Bay, 2001
FLEMING CATCHES WAGNER IN ONE CATEGORY, CONTINUES ASSAULT ON TWO OTHER MARKS
By posting another huge game on Sunday against the Storm, Predators WR/LB Cory Fleming continued his assault on Barry Wagner's single season receiving records. Fleming posted his fifth game of 10 or more catches and sixth game of 100 or more receiving yards against the Storm, grabbing a game-high 12 receptions for 131 yards and three touchdowns. The totals gave Fleming 101 receptions for 1,262 yards and 26 touchdowns on the 2004 season with four games remaining. The 101 receptions is a new Orlando Predators single-season mark, passing Barry Wagner's 1997 mark of 99 receptions. With 1262 receiving yards, Fleming would need to average less than 63 yards per game in his final four games to pass Wagner's single season record of 1,527 yards â also set in the 1997 season. Fleming also needs just six receiving touchdowns in the final four games to pass Wagner's record of 31 receiving touchdowns in 1997. Fleming is currently number two in the Arena Football League in receptions.

PREDATORS DECLARE BALL HUGE SUCCESS
A near sellout crowd of 350 patrons was on hand Saturday night for the Orlando Predators inaugural Black and Red Ball. Team President declared the event a huge success and said the Ball would result in substantial donations to the Conductive Education Centers of Florida and the Ronald McDonald Houses of Orlando. The event opened with cocktails, silent auction and entertainment on the main concourse of the TD Waterhouse Centre, followed by dinner, live auction, music and dancing on the Predators home turf. Commissioner David Baker delivered an inspirational keynote address on the importance of sports and Arena Football in society and Head Coach Jay Gruden was honored for his significant contributions to the Orlando Predators organization. The event, hosted by WESH Sports Director Pat Clarke, concluded with a giant video screen salute to Gruden, covering his entire career from Pee-Wee Football through last season. The team will announce the final results and the charity donation in a few weeks. "A great event and a great night for the Predators organization," Bouchy added. "It is an event that we are going to do every year and we believe it will get bigger and better every year."
McENTYRE MOVES INTO SECOND
With his interception against Tampa Bay, Kenny McEntyre moved into sole possession of second place in interceptions with seven. Omar Smith picked off two passes last week to move to eight for the season.

McGRIFF AND FLEMING MOST PROLIFIC COMBO NIGHT IN FRANCHISE HISTORY
For the first time this season and just the ninth time in Predators history, Orlando had a pair of receivers go over the 100-yard mark in the same game when Cory Fleming (12-131) and Travis McGriff (10-163) each eclipsed the century mark. The 294 combined receiving yards were highest ever in a single a game by two Predators receivers and it also marked the first time two Predators receivers caught 10 or more passes in a single game. The best combinations in franchise history include:

PLAYERS TO WATCH
ORLANDO / NEW ORLEANS
VooDoo FB/LB Dan Curran
New Orleans features the Arena Football League's top rusher in Dan Curran, who has gained 272 yards and scored 17 touchdowns on the ground this season. Orlando did a good job of bottling up Curran in the first meeting â limiting the bruising runner to just four yards on five carries.
Predators Quarterback Joe Hamilton
Since returning from a mid-season knee injury, Hamilton has been solid in leading the Predators to a 3-1 record. The rookie from Georgia Tech threw for career highs in yardage (318) and touchdowns (7) in the loss to Tampa Bay last week. In his last four games, Hamilton's numbers over the last four games include 72 of 114 (63.2%) for 859 yards, 20 touchdowns and just two interceptions.
VooDoo Quarterback John Fitzgerald
When given time to throw, Fitzgerald is an extremely capable quarterback that has thrown for 2,532 yards on a 57% pass completion ratio (198 of 349). But in the few times this season when the pass rush has gotten to him, Fitzgerald has struggled. Against Orlando, he completed just 12 of 26 passes for 179 yards and one touchdown and last week, he threw a season-high four interceptions and just two scores on an 18 for 30 night against San Jose.
Predators OL/DL Jermaine Smith
The All-Arena player missed last week's game with injury and his absence was felt as the Predators failed to exert any pressure on Tampa Bay's John Stafford. Orlando will need Smith's presence against New Orleans this week.
