AFL names players of the week

NEW YORK – San Jose SaberCats quarterback MARK GRIEB, New York Dragons defensive specialist COREY JOHNSON and Columbus Destroyers wide receiver/defensive back SEDRICK ROBINSON have been named Baby Ruth Real Deal Offensive Player, ADT Defensive Player and U.S. Army Ironman of the Week, respectively, for Week 13 of the 2004 season.

Grieb (6-3, 208, California-Davis), who is in his seventh AFL season, earned Offensive Player of the Week honors by leading the AFLWA No. 1 ranked San Jose SaberCats (10-2) to a 68-34 victory over the No. 2-ranked New Orleans VooDoo (9-3) on Saturday. The 2002 Offensive Player of the Year completed 23-of-29 passes (79.3 percent) for 290 yards, five touchdowns and no interceptions. Led by Grieb's rushing touchdown, 10-for-10 passing and three second-half touchdowns, the SaberCats outscored the VooDoo 40-7 in the second half. This marks the third time that the former Aggie has earned an AFL weekly honor, and second this season (Week 6).

Johnson (5-9, 190, Georgia), who is in his seventh season, helped lead the New York Dragons (7-5) to a 44-20 victory over the Dallas Desperados (6-6) on Saturday. The former All-Rookie performer led the Dragons with 9.0 total tackles, one pass breakup and a team record-tying three interceptions (twice, last by MIKE FURREY, May 18, 2002). This marks the first time that the former Bulldog has earned an AFL weekly honor.

Robinson (5-9, 180, Kentucky Wesleyan) led the Columbus Destroyers (4-8) in all facets during their 60-52 victory over the Carolina Cobras (4-8) on Saturday. The four-year veteran recorded six receptions for 152 yards and two touchdowns; threw for a 34-yard touchdown pass; and added three rushes for 12 yards and a touchdown on offense. He added six kickoff returns for 108 yards on special teams for 272 all-purpose yards. On defense, Robinson tallied 2.0 total tackles. This marks the fifth time that the former All-Rookie performer has earned an AFL weekly honor.

Baby Ruth Real Deal Offensive Player of the Week candidates included: Arizona's Sherdrick Bonner, Austin's John Kaleo, Chicago's Chad Salisbury, Colorado's John Dutton, Columbus' Sedrick Robinson, Las Vegas' Clint Dolezel, New York's Will Holder, Orlando's Travis McGriff and Tampa Bay's Shane Stafford.

ADT Defensive Player of the Week candidates included: Arizona's Tony Plantin, Chicago's DeJuan Alfonzo, Colorado's Rashad Floyd, Columbus' JoJo Polk, Grand Rapids' Cecil Doggette, Las Vegas' Cornelius Bonner, San Jose's Omarr Smith and Tampa Bay's Nyle Wiren.

U.S. Army Ironman of the Week candidates included: Arizona's Randy Gatewood, Austin's Darrin Chiaverini, Chicago's DeJuan Alfonzo, Colorado's Kevin McKenzie, Columbus' Tyronn Johnson, Dallas' Bobby Sippio, Las Vegas' Frank Carter, San Jose's Fred Coleman and Tampa Bay's T.T. Toliver.
