Traverse City Beach Bums News Release

TRAVERSE CITY, MI - The Frontier Greys posted three runs in the top of the first inning and held off some late threats to beat the Traverse City Beach Bums 6-1 on Wednesday night at Wuerfel Park.

The first four batters of the game reached for the Greys netting them a run on an error and then another on an RBI single from Chris Ellison. Jon Minucci grounded into a double play to push across a third run in the frame.

Traverse City bounced back in the bottom half of the inning with a run of its own. Rob Benedict was hit by a pitch, stole second, moved to third on a passed ball and scored on an infield single by Yazy Arbelo to cut the deficit to 3-1.

That would be the lone run of the game for the Beach Bums, though, as Frontier starter Mark Belcastro kept TC in check. Belcastro (2-1) had his best start of the year, lasting seven innings while allowing an unearned run on five hits. Traverse City had chances in the third and sixth innings, but diving catches by Greys' fielders kept the Beach Bums off the board.

Meanwhile, Joe Rapp added to Frontier's lead with a two-run homer in the top of the third off Traverse City starter Tanner Tripp. After the home run, Tripp (1-7) retired 11 of the next 13 he faced before giving up two singles to lead off the seventh. The righthander went six-plus frames, allowing six runs, four earned, on eight hits with a pair of strikeouts.

Frontier ended up getting a run in the seventh against Chuck Ghysels on a Rapp two-out single.

Traverse City put two on with two out in the eighth and loaded the bases with two gone in the ninth inning, but couldn't scratch across any tallies.

Traverse City will look to even the series on Thursday evening at 7:05 p.m. Alex Phillips (2-6, 3.68) gets the ball for the Beach Bums against the Greys' Keith Picht (2-6, 6.36). In addition to Thirsty Thursday specials, one lucky fan will win a golf-and-stay giveaway to Shanty Creek Resort. Those unable to make the game can listen to the broadcast starting at 6:45 p.m. on Classic Rock the Bear 98.1/107.1 and classicrockthebear.com.
