Washington Wild Things News Release
Washington, PA-The Washington Wild Things, presented by Washington Financial, announced former Wild Thing utility man and Pittsburgh native Andrew Heck will serve as the team's first base coach for the remainder of the 2014 season.
Heck, named head coach of the Sewickley Academy baseball team in 2013, recently finished the program's most successful season in over a decade. In addition to leading the team to the WPIAL semifinals for the first time in program history, their win over Bishop Canevin High School was the first postseason victory in more than 15 years.
In Heck's first season at the helm of the Panthers, Sewickley baseball went 11-6 overall and tied for second in their section (Class A-Section 5) with a 7-3 record. That earned the team a spot in the WPIAL postseason for the first time since 2006.
Prior to his coaching duties, Heck split time in professional baseball between the Wild Things and the Traverse City Beach Bums of the Frontier League. During two seasons (2012-2013), Heck appeared in 93 games, scored 42 runs, tallied 92 hits, belted 16 doubles, powered three triples and clobbered two home runs with 35 RBI. Heck had a .283 batting average but left the Beach Bums after just 11 games in 2013.
Collegiately, Heck played three years at Duquesne University before the program was dropped following the 2010 season. The former A10 All-Conference selection and John Olerud Two-Way Player of the Year Watch List nominee led the Dukes in nine offensive and four pitching categories. Heck surpassed school records and ranked amongst the top in program history with 91 hits and 25 doubles. He also set a school record for assists in a season with 156 as a freshman. From the other side of the mound, Heck also excelled on the bump. As a sophomore at Duquesne, he led the pitching staff with a 3.78 ERA. Heck finished his last year of collegiate baseball at Oklahoma State University.
The North Hills High School graduate will join the Wild Things for the rest of the season as they continue the quest for first place in the Frontier League East Division and look to capture their first postseason berth since 2007. The Wild Things and Schaumburg Boomers begin a three-game beginning Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. EDT.
