Schaumburg, IL -- The Washington Wild Things, presented by Washington Financial, picked up the win in extra innings in game one against the Schaumburg Boomers with a final score of 5-1 Wednesday night.

It took extra innings for the winner to emerge in this one - a true p itcher's duel with no runs prior to the fourth inning. Washington's South Paw Zac Fuesser had a tremendous outing, throwing seven innings, allowing only four hits and one unearned run. Schaumburg pitcher Seth Webster also had an impressive performance, tossing eight innings and allowing one run on four hits.

After the Wild Things turned a miraculous 1-2-3 double play with the bases loaded and no outs in the fourth inning, the Boomers scored the first run of the ball game off an error by short stop Garrett Rau allowing Mark Nelson to cross the plate and make the game 1-0.

Washington quickly answered with a run of their own in the fifth. Garrett Rau led off the inning with a stand up double and would later come around to score off a sacrifice fly RBI to left center field that would allow Washington to score and tie the ball game at one.

The game remained tied as the regulation nine innings came to an end.

The Washington bats caught fire in the tenth inning when they picked up four runs. Designated hitter Jose Dore brought in the first run of the inning scoring Garrett Rau off an RBI double (Dore's second RBI of the night). Daniel Poma added two more runs for Washington with a two-run single and he went on to score before the inning was over off a CJ Beatty sacrifice fly into center field to make the score 5-1.

The Wild Things will be back in action Thursday for game two against the Schaumburg Boomers. First pitch is scheduled for 7:30 EDT. Air time on WJPA 95.3 FM is 7:25.
